Applying for International Experience Canada

If you hadn't already noticed, it is a huge passion of mine to share my experiences in the hope to inspire YOU (yes YOU).

Working in Canada sounds exciting right? Read on.....

I am writing this blog on Wednesday 15th May (NZ time) as it was today that I have been approved for the International Experience Canada (14th June Canadian time). I hope to share with you information which I hope will be useful when applying or thinking about applying for yours!

It is always daunting to start a new visa process when the government websites are not so easy to navigate around, never mind the fact that the CIC is not fully compatible with smart phones! Very frustrating!

For 2016 the application process for International Experience Canada has become easier. Previously, to get a Canadian work visa, it was on a first come first served basis, very similar to when you want tickets to Glastonbury Festival.... In 9 mins they had all gone!! Now, you fill out some basic details online to see if you are eligible and if you are, you then go into a pool of people and wait to be invited to apply.

International Experience Canada (IEC) provides young individuals the opportunity to travel and work in Canada. For British Citizens this is 18-30 but you have until your 31st birthday to apply!!

I completed my online profile back at the beginning of February and waited, and waited (My partner is French and he was invited just 3 days after completing his online profile. A Japanese friend was also invited the same day as applying). Finally on 30th April I was invited to apply for the IEC. All countries have a different quota, opening dates and deadlines to apply. Be sure to check. My focus in this post is for British Citizens.

Where to apply?

The first step is to determine your eligibility http://www.cic.gc.ca/ctc-vac/cometocanada.asp

If you are eligible, you then can complete and submit your IEC profile online.

You will then be put into a IEC pool and CIC will have rounds of invitations where they will invite candidates from the pool(s) to apply. Completing an online IEC profile and entering the pool does not guarantee that you will get an invitation to apply for a work permit. I was in the pool for almost 3 months. Some candidates may not receive an invitation to apply before the season ends. The applications opened for 2016 for British Citizens on 16th December 2015 and are still open!

Rounds of Invitations

You can check the schedule for the 2016 season here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/iec/selections.asp

If you get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) you have just 10 days to click “start application” and then 20 days after you click start to complete your work permit application. If you do not have all of your required documents ready, DO NOT click start. Use the time to gather what you need, and then make sure you click start within the 10 days.

What will need once you have been invited?

an up to date CV

10 years of employment history with no gaps (entered into the online application)

a scanned copy of a passport sized photograph

a scanned copy of your passport

print out a 'family history form' fill it in and scan back in

police checks from all countries where you have lived for more than 6 months

Police checks

To obtain a UK police certificate you must apply online at www.acro.police.uk

To obtain an Australian a national police check you must apply online at www.afp.gov.au

The NZ police check was the trickest. On the CIC website it suggested that I complete a consent to disclosure of information form. This is not the correct form for IEC applicants and you must scroll down to 'special notes and considerations' to see this. For NZ you must print out the form ' Request your own criminal conviction history' fill it in, scan it and then send along with a scanned copy of your passport or NZ Drivers License to criminalrecord@justice.govt.nz

Medical exams

Do not undergo exams until you are asked. The medical exams are around $400 NZ and not everyone requires it. I had been researching into having an examination ahead of time and I am very happy I did not do it because I have not been asked to have one And my application has been approved.

I hope this answers some of your questions.

Peace and Love

The Amtrak Coast Starlight... LA to San Francisco

Most people would define luxury travel as a first class airline ticket, five star accommodation, and a private chauffeur. I define it as the experience to view a country in a manner that will have us telling our story for years...

Los Angeles in two days...

Exploring Los Angeles in just two days...

When visiting a new city, you are always listed with the must see's and do's in popular guide books. Every time I intend to visit a new destination, I never fail to buy The Lonely Planet Guide.

But let's be honest, what you really want to know is where to view the Hollywood sign and take the best photograph, right? Read on...

Downtown LA

This cities truths are not what you see in the movies. LA is a region of America's richest and poorest. First I arrived in Downtown LA although anyone would think I had landed in Mexico. It looked somewhat similar Asia or India minus the population. Everyone speaks Spanish and everything looked a little run down. I checked into my hostel. As some of you may know, I manage a hostel in New Zealand. The standard is very different here. Despite the size of LA, it only houses 10 hostels. Apparently Americans don't like the idea. Needless to say, they are not the target market when running a hostel. Stay on The View in Mariachi Plaza (Gold Line Metro Station) is where I stayed for my first night in LA. The hostel had been open for about a month under new management. The staff there are lovely and with time it could really be transformed into a very nice hostel. They offered free wifi, warm showers and a clean environment.

The Wisdom Tree- Griffith Park

After recovering from jet lag, I wanted to do some exploring LA. I decided to google the top things to do and I stumbled across a very interesting post from modernhiker.com. He detailed a hike to 'The Wisdom Tree'. I had met a couple of people in the hostel and invited them to come on the adventure with me. All adventures are best shared with friends.

I would argue that this hike has the best view and is the less travelled trail in LA. High up on Cahuenga Peak, about a 15-minute walk west of the Hollywood sign, stands the lone pine tree. Under the tree sits a box filled with journals, where visitors write their thoughts, feelings and bad poetry.

I read in The Lonely Planet 'you can't leave California without hugging a tree'. So with that in mind, we gave the Wisdom Tree a great big hug.

To get to the start of the trail you must take the Metro Red Line from Union Station to Hollywood/Vine. When you are out of the station you should stay on the same side and turn left and make your way to the bus stop for Bus 222. Take this bus to Barham/Lake Hollywood Dr. Walk up Lake Hollywood drive until you reach Wonder View Drive where you start the trail.

This hike is very steep and there is no shade at all along the 1.5 mile hike up until you reach the top. I did this hike in converse as I hadn't packed with a view to hike. Although my converse served me well, I would recommend proper walking shoes/hiking footwear as many time on the way down I slipped. There were times when I thought I would not make it. You ascend almost all of the hike before you hit the first mile. Take plenty of water.

Hollywood

The Hollywood Sign represents the dreams of millions. It's a symbol. It is as the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. It represents the movies.

The best spot to take best photo of the sign is at the multistory mall by Hollywood & Highland metro station. Walk on up to the second level where you will see people standing on the platform.

The Hollywood walk of fame honors over 2000 celebrities with stars embedded into the sidewalk (path). I always imagined there was a designated area for these stars but as I got off the metro, I stumbled across them and I was surprised to see them on both sides of the path for miles.

The Chinese theatre houses the imprints of movie legends in cement on the floor.

Pasadena

This city is worlds apart from Downtown LA. This is how I imagined LA.... Modern and wealthy! I spent two nights here in the Sheraton Hotel. I haven't made a permanent swap from hostel life to hotel life (I wouldn't be able to do nearly as much traveling as I do staying in hotels) I was lucky to share the hotel with my friend Karen who is put up in the hotel by Virgin as part of her work trip.

Santa Monica

A playful and seedy city by the beach! Walk or bike along the sea front to Venice beach. A must do for visitors and locals. Stroll along the pier. Here you will find the last stop on the Route 66.

Getting around LA

Possibly one of the easiest and cheapest cities to get around. Get your tap card at the metro station for $1.00 and load it with a day pass for just $7.00 or a one way journey for $1.75. This pass is for trains and buses.

You can take the 733 from outside Culver City Metro Station (blue Line) all the way to Santa Monica Pier. This is the quickest route. Alternatively you can catch the 733 from outside Union Station (Gold Line).

Peace and Love

Christchurch, a city both interesting and inspiring

A question I get asked most days is how I ended up in New Zealand and furthermore why I chose Christchurch. One friend even reffered to it as 'a place worse than Syria'.

Christchurch is New Zealands second largest city, so it was no suprise that when searching for job opportunities, this was a good place to start. More than a third of New Zealands population actually live in Auckland and most of the job opportunities other than labour work were actually in Auckland however I some how got lucky and had two job offers in Christchurch.

It was time for another adventure, I had lived and worked in Australia for almost 2 years, traveled some of South East Asia and worked and lived in India for 6 months. Where was next? I could not think of any better place than New Zealand. If you had asked me 3 years ago if I would be here now, I would have probably said no but while in India I began to have this urge to go. I always dream of my next adventure while I am currently on one. So there is no suprise that I am currently dreaming of Canada and a Europe tour.

Back to Christchurch, as the next adventure is a long way down the line from now. I have committed myself to a year here in Christchurch as I am now managing a backpackers hostel with my partner Ben (yes I finally met my wanderlust prince) someone I can now share all of my adventures with. If you stumble accross my blog and are planning a visit to Christchurch then do come and say hello. We are at Foley Towers :)

No where in New Zealand is changing and developing as fast as post-earthquake Christchurch, and being a part of a city as it is being rebuilt and reborn is both interesting and inspiring. It is a city in transition, coping resilently and creatively with the aftermath of New Zealands second biggest natural disaster.

Most recently local artists have designed and decorated 99 giraffes which have popped up around the CBD and surrounding areas of the city. These are part of a Christchurch Stands Tall campaign which when they are auctioned off in February will raise money for charities and to help with the cost of the rebuild of Christchurch. There is even a smart phone app with all the locations of each giraffe so that you can mark them off when you have found them.

I am currently builinding my life in a city that is building around me and it is just so exciting. There is something new every week.

It isn't a city for everyone and certainly isn't a city for the faint hearted. There are 185 chairs that have been painted white which are a temporary art exhibition to represent those that lost their lives. Many shops, banks, post offices, food stores and even bars now operate out of shipping containers. There is a mall known as re: start mall which is mainly built of shipping containers and food outlets in caravans/trailers. It is so rustic and creative. I hope that these will remain because it makes the city so unique and interesting.

Have I made you eager to learn more? I hope so :)

www.christhchurchnz.com

Peace and Love

Traveling Solo in Varanasi, India

Lonely Planet and Facebook Friends had raved about Brown Bread Bakery to have the 'best sandwiches in town'

First thing I wanted to do on arrival at this city after my 26 hour train journey, other than have a nap was to find this restaurant.

I wasted no time and began my way into the chaotic madness alone. I first stumbled across one of the many 'Burning Ghats' I saw a dead person lying on a bed made of wood, people all around and a woman singing and crying. It bought a year to my eye but I didn't leave. I wanted to experience it. After all I had heard about it. Varanasi is regarded as one of Hinduisms seven holy cities. Pilgrims come to the ghats to wash away sins or cremate their loved ones. It is not for the faint hearted. I think it is a magical way to go. My uncle Rupert had always told me he wanted to be cremated on a ship set free to sea :) I left because I started to feel a bit uncomfortable on my own with everyone staring at me and I had that odd person that asked me to follow him for a better view.

I carried on my search for Brown Bread Bakery. It wasn't long before I was asked if I wanted to buy any scarfs or silk and so instead of saying no, I decided to follow the man as I had wanted to find some harem pants for a customer order. You will be surprised at what you find when you venture into the markets. A couple of young boys attached themselves to me in my search for a Tailor to make the 'perfect harem pants' I was thirsty and just had in mind that I wanted to find Brown Bread Bakery. The boys kindly showed me the way. They tried to take me into the Brown Bread Bakery located on the other side of the road which isn't the one recommended in Lonely Planet but a Western tourist pointed me to 'the right one'

I made my way up to the rooftop. I ordered a Lemon Ice Tea and I didn't really fancy a sandwhich so I ordered the home made musli which was made by women from the Charity 'Learn for Life' I was enjoying the rest until I realised I had been waiting an hour for a bowl of Musli with milk! I stormed downstairs to pay for my Ice Tea and said I had been waiting an hour for a bowl of Musli. They had totally forgotten. They told me they could have it ready in 2 minutes, but my day had already been ruined and I left!!

While it is all well and good preparing your itinerary, you must not rely on the recommendations of others as the only things you must do and see in a place. Although one of the most disappointing feelings is when you leave a destination and meet a fellow traveler who asks ‘did you visit the....' and you have no clue what they are referring to.

This evening I went out in search for another restaurant. I had seen one called Zoe the night previously and decided I would like to go there. I tried to explain to a man with a Rickshaw and showed him a picture I had taken of the outside. He asked a fellow passer by and we were on our way. I noticed a Dominos Pizza and Mall in the distance, my eyes lit up and at the same time I realised he definitely did not know where he was going and I asked for him to drop me at the mall. I didn't want a pizza but I thought there might be other options, turns out I was wrong. My search for good food in this city was non existent.

I decided to walk back towards my guest house in the hope I would find somewhere to eat and I stumbled across very nice looking restaurant on the other side of the road. I crossed over and went in and the inside was just as quirky and just what I needed. The restaurant was called i:ba Cafe Restaurant in Shivala. Not long after taking a seat I was joined by a lovely family of 4 from America. I had been feeling a little lonely since I had arrived, having left friends I had spent the last 2 weeks with. So a table conversation was just perfect. I returned to my guest house feeling very lucky to have had people to share my day and travel stories with and likewise hear of theirs.

If you start to feel down about being alone, you must go and get lost somewhere and you will be surprised at what you find... You will find yourself :)

Peace and Love xx

Jump on board with the Mala Necklace. We're taking off this year...

Inspiration for these Wander Gems have come from India and Yoga.

For the purple Mala: Gems, Beads & Findings used... Ruby & Stirling Silver Spacer Beads, 108 Rudraksh Beads, Strong Tiger Tail Wire and Silk Yarn.

This necklace is known as a Mala Necklace... it is a necklace for those seeking a calmer mind, body, and spirit. It also promotes peace and well being.

All spacer beads are Stirling Silver & Ruby. The Ruby is considered to be the most powerful gem in the universe, and is associated with many astral signs.

To own a Ruby is said to have contentment and peace. Placed under a pillow the Ruby may ward off bad dreams. Given as a gift, the Ruby is a symbol of friendship and love. The Ruby is also the symbol of vitality and royalty.

Rudraksh Beads are the main beads used in this necklace... The seed of the Rudraksha tree (Elaeocarpus granitrus) holds a very special place in Hinduism, and is credited to possess mystical and divine properties. Necklaces made of Rudraksha beads are considered auspicious as well as powerful, and are supposed to have profound astrological and health benefits. It is believed that one who wears Rudraksha is untouched by sins, and is protected from all impious deeds or thoughts.

All my creations can be viewed and brought at my online shop www.mywanderingheartshop.etsy.com

Applying for an Indian Visa... What they don't tell you...

I booked my flight back in mid December for a flight to Delhi on 16th Jan. I had to get my passport renewed on the 4th Jan so I did not really have enough time to send my passport off to get my visa.

I searched the Internet for answers on what would be the quickest way to obtain an Indian visa. Nothing seemed straight forward!

Of all the places I have visitied, getting a visa has been pretty simple. Either online, on arrival or within a day so I didnt think a visa to india would be any different... I WAS WRONG!!

I logged on to the website for 'The High commision of India' www.hcilondon.in to apply for my visa, I was then directed to M/S VF Services UK Ltd which is the company that The High Comission of India uses to apply for visa applications http://in.vfsglobal.co.uk

I clicked on the link for visa processing times but got nothing for 'in person' or for 'fast applications' so I decided to email them and ask what the quickest way was. I also explained that I was wishing to book an appointment for the 14th of Jan and would be flying out on the 16th.

The reply I got was general as I am sure they would have picked up on my timings had they bothered to give an individual reply.

I was told that appointments can be made online but these are purely optional. You have the choice to complete the online application and walk into the visa centre without an appointment. I was also told that the quickest way is to submit the visa application in person for processing as postal applications need a minimum of 10-15 working days to be processed.

THEY FAILED TO MENTION HOW LONG IT TOOK WHEN SUBMITTING IN PERSON!!

I therefore assumed it could be done within one day much like renwing a passport which can be done with one day.

There are two visa application centres in London:

Goswell Road, London, EC1V 1DE

Uxbridge Road, Hayes, UB4 OJN

I chose to make my way to the one in Hayes as didnt fancy getting lost in the city of London. I had to travel by train. There was also no information on what train station I would need to get to or bus routes or anything!!

The Hayes application centre is infact in Southall and you need to get to Southall train station if arriving by train. This station is served by the Heathrow connect Service and only takes approximately 30 mins from London Paddington.

Once arriving at Southall I asked at the train station ticketing desk how I would get to the application centre. I was told it was too far to walk and to catch the 470 bus from the opposite side of the road which was a bus to Uxbridge. I finally found a stop that the 470 used and got on the bus to be told that he would not accept my £10 note. i got off the bus and went to change my money in Gregs and the kind lady told me it was within 15 mins walking distance and so thats what I did.

On arriving at Southall Station you should turn right and head towards Uxbridge. You will need to cross the road and turn left onto Uxbride Road at the crossroads. The visa application centre is over the bridge and just before the Fiat car Garage.

Visa Applications MUST be submitted between 08:30 and 14:30 ONLY

Passports and Visa MUST be colleceted between 16:30 and 17:30 ONLY

The visa office was extremely busy on the day i arrived and I can only imagine it is like this most days so allow 1-2 hours to be there to submit your application and 30 mins to and hour to pick up your passport.

For the visa you MUST submit 2 photographs which need to be 50x50 mm (this is not the same as a passport photo)

There is a photo booth to do these on the day and the cost is £10.00

When my number was called, I handed over my visa application (which I filled in online at http://in.vfsglobal.co.uk) I was asked if i wanted to receive my passport in the post or pick it up and was also told it would not be ready until Thursday....My flight was at 13:00 on Thursday!!!!!

So a long story short...

Fill in the online visa application

Take some 50x50 mm Photos

Decide on a walk in or postal application dependant on the time you have

Decide which visa application centre you want to submit to... both accepts walk in and postal apllications

ALLOW 3 DAYS FOR WALK IN APPLICATIONS

ALLOW 10-15 DAYS FOR POSTAL APPLICATIONS

Visas run from the date they were issued not the date of arrival!! I applied for a tourist visa and i got 6 months multiple entry but i understand that this is not always the case.

Good luck and hope this helps.

As I drive into the desert, bush or wilderness, I'm constantly in awe of the wide, open land and the beauty of this great country.

Innamincka, South Australia, situated in the Simpson Desert with a population of 8 people and a 8 hour drive to the nearest city.

Ellimeek Station, Queensland, ran cattle on 56,000 acres with just family running the station.

Seven Spirit Bay, Northern Territory, with no road access and only accessible by plane or boat.

Kooljaman at Cape Leveque, Western Australia with stunning almost isolated beaches.

It is like living on an island. I love the isolation, the natural state of the environment.

I had no idea that this culture existed within Australia and what I didn't intend on discovering was a passion for the rural way of life .

Alice Springs - Yalara

Alice Springs

Kings Canyon

Uluru (Ayresrock Rock)

Kata Tjuta (The Olgas)

Yulara (Ayresrock Rock Resort)

Day 1: We kick started the day with a camel ride at an outback camel farm which was $7... Bargain!! It was surprisingly compfy and just like being on a horse; I guess until it started to run!! All camels in Australia only have one hump. We stopped for lunch at a camel station before continuing our journey to Kings Canyon. We did the Kibgs Canyon Rim walk which was approximately 3-4 hours begining with a steep limb to the top of the canyon. The walk was over broken, rocky ground ear steep cliffs and deep crevices. A series of wooden stairs lead down to the garden of eden and then back up to the rim of the canyon. I felt awesome after that walk. We slept over night in a swag at Kings Canyon Resort under the clear desert night sky. The stars were incredible since we were so far from lights and you could see the a Milky Way. We lined up our swags around the camp fire.

Day 2: We got up early to hit the road to Uluru. We drove past Mount Conner which at first I thought was Uluru but you can see from the photos that they are some what very different. We stopped at Curtin Springs where we had a 3 hour stop over due to a road accident. We had our lunch here. Once we were able to get back on the road we continued to Yulara and set up camp at Ayresrock Rock Resort before heading to Uluru and Kata Tjuta National Park. We explored the ancient formation of Kata Tjuta on the Valley of the Winds hike and then completed the day watching sunset over Uluru. A BBQ dinner topped off a great day in the outback.

Day 3: Another early start to experience a Uluru sunrise. Afterwards we took a base walk of the iconic rock before gaining an insight into Aboriginal culture from our guide which was extremely interesting. Some of our group climbed the rock, only one made it to the top where he said he meditated and connected with the Aboriginals. However I chose to respect their wishes and not climb. After the walk we visited the Cultural Centre for an insight into the Anangu way if life before finishing the tour back in Alice Springs. I checked back into Haven and went out for dinner and drinks with some people I had met on the tour.

Peace and Love

Darwin - Alice Springs

I have always admired people who travel alone. I have been in Australia on my own since February but this was my first tour where I did not know anyone. I had spent 5 days in Darwin with my good friends Liam and Lucas when I decided I needed some adventure in my life before heading back to work. I went into Peter Pans travel shop and booked to leave the following day with Mulgas Adventures on a 2 day tour to Alice Springs, followed by a 3 day 'Rock the Centre' tour with Adventure Tours.

Day 1: I was picked up at 6am and was the first of 8 to be collected before hitting the highway. We drove through Katherine which was the first timecI had seen so many aborigionals. Our first stop was Bitter Springs Natural River at Elsey National Park. The park had stunning palm trees, walking tracks and the water was around 25 degrees, it was breath taking. Next stop was Matarancka Thermal Pool and Rainbow Spring Natural swimming pool. Both were a classic oasis with clear warm water. Therwalking short loop track winding through the palm forest to the Waterhouse river and then to Rainbow Spring, the source of the thermal pool.

Our next stop was Daly Waters Outback Pub. On entering the pub I was greeted by an array of outrageous decor of bras and pants as well as ID cards that covered the front of the bar. We had a BBQ dinner around the pool.

Day 2: Our first stop today was at Devils Marbles. Aboriginals believe if their children come to play here, they are taken by the stones. We had a short game of rugby and then continued on to Wycliffe Well, the UFO Centre of Australia. The service station was decorated with all things Alien. That night I checked into Haven in Alice Springs. Everyone else was staying at Annie's Place and so I head there for an evening meal with the group and a few cheeky ciders.

Peace and Love

4 Airports, 3 flights, 3 states... 1 Day!

Alice Springs - Sydney - Brisbane - Townsville

I am currently on my 3rd flight of the day traveling between Brisbane and Townsville, kicked back in an exit seat with a can of coke....

After my 3 day 'Rock The Centre' tour it's time to head off to Townsville to be reunited with my second family.

My day started off pretty well with my new friend Yu Yuen making me breakfast before my airport shuttle and then being offered a free shuttle ticket by a fellow backpacker as he was catching a cab instead :)

The cheapest and believe it or not, quickest way from Alice Springs to Townsville was by flight via Sydney and Brisbane, that's 3 flights over 3 states and 9 hours!! That is possibly the equivalent of traveling between Exeter and Nottingham and going via France and Cardiff!! Mental!! The other option was the Greyhound Bus... This would have been 4 different buses over 2 days and more expensive than flying... No thanks!

I travelled with Qantas to get a better service than Jet Star... Great I get 3 plane meals but the baggage allowance on domestic flights is a joke.... One piece of check in baggage at 23kg and I have 2 pieces at just 20kg and the check in agent charges me $40 for a fucking guitar that weighs just 4kg. A guitar that has now cost me $100 in excess baggage, $500 to purchase and is just generally an inconvenience to travel with given the amount I already have to lug around and the fact it is now broken due to travel. Of course I threw a tantrum and even tried to go without paying but they called my name over the loud speaker and I was unable to board until it had been paid! I've been traveling Domestic trough Australia for almost 2 years not to mention my travel background and I have never heard of anything so ridiculous. I was ready to smack someone.

On a lighter note, I get to see Zoe in an hour and I've also booked my flight home.... See you in 3 months kids... Too excited!!

Peace and Love

Seven Spirit Bay Wilderness Lodge

Just as tribal ancestors were inspired by the land so many thousands of years ago, Seven Spirit Bay will touch your soul and inspire your sense of adventure.

My adventure to this remote wilderness region began with a 45-minute scenic flight in a light aircraft, travelling northeast from Darwin over Van Diemens Gulf to the Cobourg Peninsula. Part of the Aboriginal Arnhem Land, the Cobourg Peninsula is situated in the Northern Territory Australia, one of the world's most brilliant tropical areas. Seven Spirit Bay is a Wilderness Lodge located in this treasured haven just a few metres from the sea. The Lodge nestles among the trees in virtually untouched forest, designed to be in complete harmony with the environment, where entry is extremely limited and by permit only.

The main building is the focus of activity from which meandering paths weave through the native, open woodland to several clusters of tropical style accommodation units, called 'sea-view villas'. The main building offers a spacious indoor/outdoor dining area, cocktail bar and guest lounge - surrounded by cool, lush lawn and broad decking which overlooks the lagoon pool and the impressive vista of the Arafura Sea.

Seven Spirit Bay offers a range of tours and activities. I have been lucky enough to experience most of these at my own leisure. I joined a group of guests on the Equilizer for a 1/2 day blue water fishing trip as well as many a late night fishing off the wharf. I have caught Black Zip Reef Shark, Mangrove Jack, Trevalli and Cod to name but a few.

I have use of the safari vehicles to drive myself around to enjoy the wildlife and visit the secluded bays such as Vashon Head, Low Point, Kennedy Bay and Gunners Quion, all of which are uniquely different. I have spent many a day off beach combing, collecting shells, washed up star fish and driftwood as well as photographing wildlife such as crocodiles and banteng.

I regularly walk along Coral Bay in the evenings which is metres away from the Lodge, I have even stumbled accross a crodile which I have to admit is terrifying but fantastic at the same time, luckily this one was just a baby and was more scared of me than I was of it.

The Parks conserve a mosaic of sandy beaches, dunes and associated coastal grasslands, mangroves, rainforest patches, swamps, lagoons, coral reefs, sea grass meadows and rich marine life. The Cobourg Marine Park protects several rare species, including the Dugong and marine turtles - Loggerhead, Hawksbill, Green, Olive Ridley, Leatherback and Flatback Turtles. The area also has an interesting ancient and contemporary history. Archaeologists generally agree that Aboriginal people have been living in the area for 40,000 years.

The Parks lie within the clan estates of the Iwaidja speaking peoples of western Arnhem Land. Custodianship is shared between four Aboriginal clan groups, the Agalda, Ngaindjagar, Madjunbalmi and Muran. These clans have continual spiritual links with the land and sea. Their ancestors from Creation Era (Dreamtime) created the land and all it contains. The Parks are therefore cultural landscapes that have been shaped and managed by cultural traditions.

Although this is a remote location and only accessible by aircraft or boat, I do not feel like I am isolated at all. I am very lucky to have been given the opportunity to work in such a beautiful location.

Peace and Love

Home Made Mozzie Repellent

You’re trying your best to enjoy a lie in or an evening meal outside, but a constant swarm of mosquitoes wake you with the sound of buzzing in your ear as the clock ticks 7am or attack as you sit down to eat your evening meal.

The threat? A pierce to your skin, leaving behind an itchy red welt and possibly even a serious illness. As you swat madly at the pests, you notice that others seem completely unfazed. Could it be that mosquitoes prefer to bite some people over others?

The short answer is yes. Mosquitoes do exhibit blood-sucking preferences.

I am interested in combating the amount of bites I get from mosquitoes and Sandflies without having to use DEET on my skin which appears to be that strong it strips of my nail polish, so it is obviously not doing my skin any good.

I have done quite a bit of research on this and there are a few different formulations you can use for your home made insect repellent.

Different insects are repelled by different chemicals.

I was recommened the following by a well travelled sailing woman from New Zealand:

Sandfly and Mosquito Repellant Recipe

Empty spray bottle

Dettol Original Liquid Disinfectant

Baby Oil

Mix at a 50/50 ratio

You can add a few drops of tea tree essential oil or citronella to make it smell better.

Peace and Love

Do you dream of living a nomadic existence? Tips to earn while you travel

A question a lot of people ask is how do I afford to travel.

Working while traveling is one of the most cost efficient ways to travel the world as you don't need to save much before you leave to go overseas, and you can travel on the local currency once you start earning. I started traveling in November 2011 with my first stop being Sydney. My dream is to travel the world for an indefinite amount of time. I throughly enjoy living a nomadic lifestyle and I hope by sharing my experiences and highlighting the struggles that I encountered I can inspire other people who dream of doing the same.

I struggled to find a job when I first arrived and I watched my friend and traveling buddy leave for the next plane home because she quickly ran out of money living a party lifestyle without a job. She worked hard at home to save up money, bought a round the world ticket and spent it all in two months traveling Thailand and ended up in Australia with little money. She had to fly home with nothing to save it all up again.

The best advice I could give to anyone is to look and apply for jobs before you leave for the country you wish to work in and always have a little bit of money in your pocket. You are probably thinking this is easier said than done. I packed my bags for Australia without a clue. I was relying on a friend to have a job sorted for us... The same friend that ran out of money and went home. I was on my own. We spent hours and days looking at job sites and gum tree but nothing came of it.... Moral of the story, we were not looking in the right places.

My friend googled 'outback pub jobs' from the UK and secured us both a job and flew back out to start work. Try typing into Google... 'Best Outback pubs' and then email the pubs/hotels directy with covering letters and a CV. Doing it this way will save time being one of many who apply through an agency and you dont have to sign up to any websites or pay anyone any fees to help you find work. There are an abundance of outback pubs, hotels and road houses in Australia always needing backpackers.

See also my previous blog 'I want to live and work in Australia but how do I go about it?' http://journals.worldnomads.com/wanderandshare/story/101871/Australia/I-want-to-live-and-work-in-Australia-How-do-I-go-about-it

Bar/Restaurant/Hotel work is probably the easiest type of work to get and can also be very rewarding if you chose the right location. Generally these types of jobs will be live in and therefore are great for saving since you will pay probably only between $80 to $100 bucks for your food and accommodation and the rest is yours with no where to spend it until you leave for your next adventure.

WWOOFING and fruit picking are also popular among backpackers. While I have never tried this there are plenty of fruit picking and packing opportunities in Australia and New Zealand. Many of these jobs are advertised on Gum Tree or you can join an agency through the following websites:

www.workanywhere.com

www.pickingjobs.com

WWOOFING involves volunteering on organic farms in exchange for accommodation and food. While this isn't paid work, it would tide you over until you can find paid work but also WWOOFING counts towards the rural work for applying for a second year working visa.

www.wwoofinternational.org

Teaching English as a second language is one of the most popular ways to make money abroad, particularly if you want to travel to Asian countries like Japan, China, Thailand, Indonesia and South Korea. For some teaching jobs you need to have a degree but there are opportunities to teach without one. You do however need to get a TEFL Certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Check out STA travel for more information: http://www.statravel.com.au/teaching-english-courses.htm

The Gold Coast, Famous for Fun

The Gold Coast is Queensland's most popular tourist destination. It is a modern city of high-rise buildings, built around beaches including the famous 'Surfers Paradise'. The Gold Coast is like 'Hollywood' of Australia. It is famous for fun. There is so much to see and do.

I have been lucky enough to visit The Gold Coast four times in my first year of being in Australia.

There are many different areas on the Gold Coast... Surfers Paradise, Miami and Nobbys Beach to name a few of my favourite spots. Surfers is where the main night life is. Miami was very relaxed and we stayed at a caravan park on the beach. Nobbys beach has some really cute shops and alternative bars.

Within 30 minutes beyond the bustling coastal strip lies the Gold Coast hinterland where the city gives way to National Parks and rain forests. I visited Purling Brook Falls in the Springbrook National Park with beautiful waterfalls and a great rainforest bush-walk.

I took a cruise to McLarens Landing at South Stradbrook Island. It was an hour and a half boat journey to the Island where had 3 hours to relax and enjoy it. Food was included in the tour and we saw native wildlife and enjoyed canoeing.

I got a season pass for Movie World, Sea World and Wet N Wild. I even took a tour on the 'Aqua Duck' which is a land and water tour starting in the heart of Surfers Paradise, taking in the views of the beaches and the luxury homes and views on the broad water. Each child traveling on the Aquaduck is given the opportunity to have a drive.... Of course I did too :)

Putt Putt mini golf was another of the many attractions I enjoyed on The Gold Coast.

I was also lucky enough to be able to go and see the 'Australian Outback Spectacular'. This is a show comprising of a three course meal and a themed australian outback setting to give you a feel of the true Aussie spirit. There is even a mustering helicopter that swoops above the arena to round up a runaway herd.

See www.visitgoldcoast.com for more info on what to see and do.

I want to live and work in Australia. How do I go about it?

Firstly you will need to apply for a visa. I literally typed visa for Australia into Google and picked a site to apply. I can not remember who I applied with but probably the best site would be the official Australian Immigration site... www.immi.gov.au

My visa was granted within a few days. It is a really easy process.

Next step is to book a flight. I regularly use Skyscanner and there is even an app for smart phones that will find you the cheapest fare. If you are under 26, STA Travel usually have the cheapest flights going.

A working holiday visa gives you longer to travel and grants you access to a country for a longer period of time than a standard tourist visa. They are designed to help you find casual work that allows you to keep your funds topped up and your travel to continue.

In Australia a tourist visa is for 3 months and a working holiday for 12 months. You will not be able to work on a tourist visa, unless of course you get cash in hand.

It is a good idea to live in a hostel in the beginning. Hostelworld is another good smart phone app for finding and booking hostels. I would strongly recommend that you try to get work for accommodation. You may have to work on reception or help make the beds for a few hours each day but in return your accommodation is free.

Talking to other people who have jobs is a great way to get in and find a job for yourself. I stayed in Surfside in Bondi and I made pancakes for 2 weeks over the Christmas period which gave me discounted accommodation and one week free. I also met a girl who worked for an entertainment company and I got a job with her selling festival tickets and promoting backpacker nights. It tied me through the struggle of arriving in Australia not knowing where I was going, what I was going to do and having little money. The price for accommodation over Christmas and New Year almost tripled so being able to work in the hostel was a god send!

Make sure you have a copy of your CV and take the time to write clever cover letters when applicable. You don't necessarily have to have printed copies but so long as you can email it or attach it or print it out if necessary.

Before you apply for work you will need a Tax File Number (TFN) This is compulsory so that you are taxed correctly and you can claim your tax back. You can do this online before you arrive in Australia... www.ato.gov.au

You will also need to open an Australian Bank Account. I opted for Commonwealth Bank but there are heaps to choose from. You have to visit a branch to do this so make it one of your first priorities when arriving in Australia and take your passport with you.

For me personally the best jobs have been remote location jobs since you spend next to nothing while you are there and can save like hell for the next adventure.

Finally the top sites to look for jobs in Australia:

www.seek.com.au

www.gumtree.com.au

www.taw.com.au

www.mlkarecruitment.com.au

www.workplaystay.com.au

www.westjobs.com.au

www.worktotravel.com.au

www.workstay.com.au

I hope you will enjoy Australia as much as I have.

Peace and Love

Travel Often, Work Hard & Play Harder

At school when I had to think about what I wanted to do when I left and while writing my personal statement, I couldn't think of anything I liked more than the thought of travel. I had only been to Jersey and Greece but I can remember thinking I would like to 'Plane Hop' This was my way of expressing a working holiday whereby I would fly to a destination, explore it while working there and save enough money to go to the next destination.

This was just a dream, I dreamt of peace and tranquility, free from material things, the thought of wearing no make up and even dreadlocks crossed my mind, walking barefoot, safari's, volunteering in third world countries, to name but a few of my thoughts.

My dream came true and I wouldn't have it any other way.... A born wanderer! People say I am lucky and ask how I can afford all the travel I do. I was lucky that my mum gave me some money when I flew to Australia to get me through before finding a job. Australia is expensive so it didn't last long but I have been able to find work along the way to save for my travels and it is very easy to do. I will post a blog about finding work in Australia to help anyone who is interested.

Please see blog 'I want to live and work in Australia...How do I go about it?'

A Wilderness Adventure in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory

When its time to go, its time to go... I was eager for a new adventure and so I packed my bags and left the desert for a wilderness adventure in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory.

I took a road trip out with a guy I had met at Innamincka working as a truck driver. James and I spent 12 hours on the road from Innamincka to Adelaide stopping at the Prairie Hotel for lunch on the way which was on the house thanks to my friend Hayley who I had met at Daintree Station last year. I stayed overnight at James parents house in Adelaide before heading to the airport for a flight to Darwin. I spent a day sleeping on the floor in the airport before my next flight out to my new home.

There were four of us starting at Seven Spirit Bay on the same day... Molly, Jen, Jock and I took a 45 minute scenic flight from Darwin to the northern coastline of the Coburg peninsula where we landed at Vashon Head at 'Seven Spirit Bay International Airport' more commonly described as a shelter and an airstrip in the dirt.

We were picked up by a 4WD that looked like we were about to go on an African Safari highlighting the remoteness of the location and its detachment to the modern world. It was like driving through the jungle, it was so green which was very different from what I had been used to in the desert. It was a 15K drive to the resort. We were all so excited and eager to get there.

Along the way Pete told us about the wild Banteng and warned us that we could not swim in the sea as it is home to crocodiles, sharks and box jelly fish.

When we arrived Molly, Jen and I walked around the resort to see what was about and took in some stunning views over the pool and across the beach.... Check out the pictures!!

When there are no guests here we have full use of the pool and the resort... I think I am going to really enjoy it here.... A whole new meaning to stay, work and play!!

Peace and Love

Everyday is an adventure in the outback

Another day off and and another adventure... Making the most of my surroundings, today we took a road trip to the famous dig tree. Andy and I made a packed lunch last night to take with us and we set off at 9:30.

I have uploaded some of our pictures from the day in the album 'life in the outback' The photo above is my favourite as we had such fun taking it with self timer. We had only 10 seconds after we pressed the button to run and get up on the sign. Some of the out takes were funny. Andy managed to run quick enough and get up in time after we had all tried to do it and failed :)

Small fish in a big pond

Eager for a new adventure and experiences, I sit here and remind myself why I am here... In the middle of the desert and then I stop for a moment and just enjoy what I do have around me...

I caught my first fish here in the creek whilst on an afternoon break between shifts. We took the speedboat out for a spin and a couple of rods and really made the most of our surroundings.

It is really beautiful here as you can see from my pictures. Life is simple and they say the best things in life are free... Life is filled with simple pleasures, the little satisfying effects you never really anticipate, but always take great pleasure in.

A Beautiful view

Having a good laugh... Laughter is the greatest cure of all. Life is extraordinary in the moments when you are laughing so hard you can barely breathe

Relaxing outdoors on a sunny day

Making someone smile

Finishing what you started... Catching that fish!! That feeling you get of self accomplishment is by far one of the most rewarding simple pleasures life has to offer :)

Peace and Love

You will only be as good as the people you surround yourself with

I've been feeling pretty blue lately and my spirits were really down. Various changes and what not had gone on at work and things had upset me a little. Andy and Maya had been away for 10 days and arrived back today. I was over the moon to see them and instantly felt happier on their arrival. We decided to go kayaking as it was my day off. The two Andy's, Maya and I set off for an afternoon adventure down the creek with cider and bundy rum... Life is sweet!! Had an amazing day.

When you surround yourself with the right people... anything is possible... You are only going to be as good as those you surround yourself with.... Something to remember :)

Peace and Love

Facebook has become Narcissistic

Today I decided that I will be deactivating my Facebook account.

Why? Everybody asks... There must be something wrong for you to do that...

Nothing is wrong, apart from the fact that as my dear friend Chris put... Facebook has become Narcissistic (I looked the word up and it described just how I feel about it)

I deactivated my personal Twiiter account some weeks a go now for the same reasons.

I find myself clicking on the Facebook app when I am bored and time is wasted scrolling the news feed to see what my friends and family have been up to and to be quite honest I do not want to find out that my friend is pregnant through Facebook. I want to receive personal emails from those I care about with regular updates as I have done for a long time with my best friend Emily. It means so much more than a 'like' and short comment on a photo or status. I remember the days when I received letters in the post. I loved this and an email has the same effect :)

The thought of removing Facebook and keeping things real is liberating.

Please keep in touch with me via email zoejuliehobson@gmail.com or you can continue to read my travel blog and view picture uploads via Instagram (username: wanderandshare)

Peace and Love
