Travel Insurance Claims - True Stories Just some of the weird and wonderful things that happen to World Nomads travellers while on the road

Shark Attack!

INDONESIA | Friday, 25 November 2011 | Views [12406] | Comments [1]

Whilst surfing in Bali, Indonesia I was attacked by a two metre Bull Shark. The shark grabbed my arm whilst I was paddling, however luckily it didn't hold on and I was able to pull my arm free. A nearby surfer responded to my cries for help and bravely helped me into the beach. All the while I was bracing myself for a second attack which, thankfully, never came. I was taken to BIMC hospital in Dempasar where the true extent of the damage became clear.

The bite to my right forearm had severed five tendons and most of the muscle, however luckily everything was still attached and my arm wasn't broken. After four hours in surgery my arm was stitched back together and five days later I was flown home to the UK for ongoing treatment and physiotherapy.

You can see more pictures of my surgery (beware: they're not for the faint hearted) and I've written a more detailed blog on this ordeal if you're interested to read more.

How World Nomads Helped

World Nomads paid upfront for the surgery so we were never out of pocket. They also paid for hotel costs so that my girlfriend could stay with me in Bali, our cancelled flights to our next destination and our flights home to the UK so that I could continue my treatment. There was never any doubt in my mind that the costs would be covered and there was a personal touch from the World Nomads team that was greatly appreciated.

Total Medical Expenses Paid - AUD $2,549

Repatriation Expenses Paid - £8,660

Total Paid converted to AUD $16,000
