My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I'm a journalism student from Australia, just about to graduate. I've spent the last six weeks studying Arabic in Oman. I originally picked up photography as a way to supplement some freelance writing I was doing at the time, but it's turned in to an all-consuming passion.

With the help of talented friends, a lot of time spent researching on the internet, and plenty of practice, I'm getting to the point where I feel I'm taking some great photographs. I've decided that of all things, I love taking photos of people. Though I started out on landscapes, experimenting with long exposure and timelapse, I think that people make the best subjects of all - they're all change and energy and every second present a different image ripe to capture.

I'm at a crossroads now. As a graduate, do I pursue photography as a career? Having a Nat Geo photographer as a mentor, even for a short time, might push me in the right direction.

I'd love to return to Oman, as I leave in a little over a week. I've found that having the language, even a bit, tends to endear you with the locals and open up a lot of opportunities for some great photography - especially when you speak their dialect.
Thanks,
Jack B
