My Scholarship entry - Kashgar Sunday Bazaar

China | Sunday, November 23, 2014 | flickr photos

At the age of 13, I was amazed at the possibilities of the emerging era of digital photography. I leapt upon the trend and got my first camera, and although its bulky proportions could only muster 2.1 megapixels, I quickly came to see the world through the lens. Learning as I went, I gradually discovered the techniques and possibilities of photography - as well as how to push the limits imposed by tough conditions, low light or complex subjects.

Over the years, I have helped run a university photography society, led seminars on techniques, been on an assignment to the Dominican Republic, and shot everything from festivals to press events. However, this has always been through rare opportunities in my career in marketing.

In future, I would like to use the power of images to help communicate the challenges of the 21st Century. Working with a National Geographic team would help help me develop a career using photography as an artistic, educational and inspirational tool to help effect change in the world. For me, photography is more than just a passion; it is an important way to share different cultures and the natural world, and in doing so, help preserve them.
