My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

My passion for photography spurred from my childhood of living in Tunisia, North Africa. Being completely immersed in their culture, I found myself infatuated by the vibrancy of the country of rich colours and textures. From the spiced aromas dwelling within the Souk, to the boisterous patterns of the hand-crafted textiles and silverware, these experiences inspired me to capture the moments in life that reminds us of true splendour.

I had overheard the National Geographic Scholarship while deciding what to study at University. My eyes have never been so glued to a television screen, and to me, I like to think that I heard this at a moment in my life when I needed it the most. A photography career is something that has always loomed inside of me, and one day I hope to travel around the world, capturing moments that define ourselves, and the stories that shake us.

Photography allows others to see the world like I do, and I want to showcase a world full of limitless wonders and overwhelming tragedies, and open the eyes of sceptics to the ‘real world’. It’s not simply pushing a button. This is something that pushes me to take the perfect shot.

Yours Sincerely,

Tom Fossati
