Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I have worked as a field biologist and wildlife guide for the past 10 years, spending months at a time in the wilderness. These endeavours – from the arctic to Ecuador – have taught me lessons in patience, observation and resolve. I also spent three years behind a desk as a government wildlife advisor, but I felt stifled, so I quit and headed down the uncertain path of reinventing myself as a visual story teller.

I have now published a small number of stories. The first was about a seven-week solo canoe trip I completed in Canada's arctic. I believe that as an adventurous person, with a love of images and a burning desire to share stories, I have a lot to offer this world. But I need some good mentors to help guide my work.

This scholarship is exactly what I need to take me from being an amateur to someone who can confidently pitch stories, win assignments and produce professional results. You won't find a more eager student. I'm accustomed to working all hours in the field, and I'm accustomed to keeping a smile on my face.

Every once in a while a rare opportunity presents itself that has the potential to be a game changer. I know that this is that opportunity for me.
