Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I remember picking up my first camera. Light weight, plastic & cheap. The joyous crunching & clicking sound of winding the film on. Disposable cameras have always been my favourite. I still get excited when collecting the shots, forgetting what I have pointed & clicked at.
I'm lucky enough to still get that feeling of excitement when picking up my DSLR & have the same habits of slowly pacing closer to my subject, walking around it, keeping the old practices as if I didn't have a zoom to rely on. Daydreams that I'm compiling shots for a Nat Geo assignment usually flowing around my mind.

Some people say that for them it's singing or dancing that makes them feel free & lost in the moment, for me it's photography. Always looking for a shot, it's who I am.
I believe if you love doing something, it shows in the results.
I had a hard time choosing which shots to submit. Do I do what is expected and show a far away place, exotic people and wildlife? Or do I take a risk & try to show somewhere that is a complete contrast. A very rarely seen place that is fairly void of colour & light.

I chose the latter. An abandoned Mental Asylum in rural Britain. In the early hours of the morning, with the sun casting long lines & shadows through the tall windows, I went searching for the hospitals mortuary.

I hope you see some passion in my choice & wonder, as I do, what I may be able to produce if given the opportunity.

Best,

Paul John Bayfield.
