My name is Ion Mates. I am an aspiring photographer, born in Romania, now studying in the United Kingdom. The technique of capturing light has become, in recent years, more and more of a passion. I started when I got my first camera at 18 and then it became a never-ending slope, with endless reading on the internet for better understanding of how the camera worked and how I could use this knowledge to my advantage. Also unforgettable were the long hours I spent looking for my subjects, usually in the woods near my home.
I have always had an attraction for the natural landscape with its stillness and harmony. Now, I have moved on to photographing urban conglomerates, with street photography being my main area of interest.
However, in recent months I have had a slight change of heart and have gone back to older ideas and concepts, most of which I can only find in nature, not the city.
This is why I hope to get this Scholarship. I've always wanted to become a National Geographic photographer because I liked the challenge of telling a story through pictures, always being on the move with new places ahead to visit.
