My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

The only thing that inspires me more than the thought of discovering life on another planet, is discovering life on this planet. I want to leave something behind, I want my photos to be remembered after I am not. I want to make a difference to life and the environment on this planet. I have worked as a Biologist for 7 years. I find Biology never ceases to amaze me. This year I was lucky enough to travel to Argentina, to Peninsula Valdes to see the Orcas feeding on the sea lion colonies on the beaches there. We waited 3 days at the beach before the Orcas showed up to attack the sea lions. When I did see an Orca snatch a sea lion almost right off the beach, it was possibly the most incredible experiences of my life. It was indescribably exhilarating. I have travelled to every continent except Africa. There are an endless number of places I still need to go to. I love being creative. My brother is a composer, and my sister is a costume designer. I love the cinema, from all over the world. I play sports where its all down to me whether I win or lose - tennis, snooker, golf. I don't like to lose. I want to be the best. I love to learn. I have a degree in Biology but would like to study marine biology intensively. My entry is about the decline of Margate, a seaside town on the Kentish coast of England. I have chosen to convey the gloomy feeling of the town in a series of dark black and whites. I feel this captures the mood of the place far better than colour photography does. I grew up here and whilst the town was in decline even then, the places photographed by me here were all still open when I was young.
