Sharing Stories - A Glimpse into Another's Life - Meet my new friends, The Argentinians

WORLDWIDE | Thursday, 14 February 2013 | Views [250] | Scholarship Entry

Let's jump to my first day when I came into the English class in Singapore. I met some people from Switzerland, Korea, Russia, Italy, Venice, Argentina, Brazil, Norway, Japan, and Poland, also Singaporean. The Argentinians got my eyes there. I found the Argentinians and very welcome and friendly. They are kind, full of humor, and they taught me some bad words (that's how we started to learn new language, right?). The difference between Indonesian and Argentinian are they are taller, thinner, handsome-er, and they all dancer. Every Argentinian can do tango dance and I really want to learn that dance from them. I was amaze when I saw they were dancing with Volare as the back sound. They taught me how to dance. I wasn't good at it.
"Chamullero" that was what they say for those who talked too much and actually there's no literally meaning for it. Their Spanish language quite different, known as Rioplatense Spanish for example they use Vos than Tú, those words mean "You" in English. Basically like "Pants" and "Trousers" in American and British. They usually call their friends with "Che Boluda/o" (in Spanish word ends with "a" is for feminine and "o" for masculine) it means "hey girl" and "hey man". Uniquely we found one similar word in Indonesian and Spanish it is "Gratis" it means free. One day in Sentosa Island we had lunch then it was where I found the Argentinians didn't like spicy food. They asked me to try Mexican food called Burritos, they said it is similar to their food. Next food is Churros. It's like a snack, like a Spanish doughnut it is thin, long and quite thick. You can add sugar, chocolate or Dulce de Leche. I am deeply curious about this Dulce de Leche thing because they told me it was like a "milk jam" and it tasted good. Then I found a Spanish restaurant in Indonesia and I tasted Dulce de Leche and it tasted like caramel. The other one is Milanesa. It is a breaded cutlet dish and consist of beef, chicken, veal sometimes pork. I never tried it, but they showed me the pictures, the shape is like chicken cordon blue. Argentinians also have time to drink Mate, it's a traditional drink in Argentina tastes like sugarless tea, it is served with a metal straw and a gourd. Making Mate is easy, just put the dried leaves into the gourd and fill it with hot water. There is one rule in drinking Mate, if you drank it with your friends around you, you have to share it.
