4/5 Everywhere we went in Afghanistan's Badakhshan province, people went out of their way to shower kindness and hospitality upon us. The younger guy here spotted us through a window that looks from his baking room into the market of Redoge village. He waved us inside, posed for a ton of pictures, and then sent us on our way with a gift of oven-fresh naan.

5/5 Many of the interactions I had in the area, and the ones that left the strongest impressions, were full of laughter and surprise. Maybe even a touch of joy? Every village we walked through, friendly waves and ringing laughter ran both ways down the path we walked.

3/5 This still being Central Asia, though, we eventually made friends and settled in for tea. In this mountainous regions, so many of the houses featured an open porch with superb views that seem like an ideal spot to sit and chat over a glass.
