2/5 As foreigners, of course, we stood out. Walking through villages we caught a lot of stares like this. While it seemed like every other child in the village of Verjun was off playing and running and being kid-like, these two guys just stood their ground and stared.

3/5 This still being Central Asia, though, we eventually made friends and settled in for tea. In this mountainous regions, so many of the houses featured an open porch with superb views that seem like an ideal spot to sit and chat over a glass.

1/5 From afar, despite all expectations to the contrary, northern Afghanistan seems so peaceful. Little villages, tucked in the hills, going about their normal daily business. So, we went.
