Secret paradise

AUSTRALIA | Sunday, 23 April 2006 | Views [2481] | Comments [2]

We first stumbled across Jervis bay when we first hitched around Australia as backpackers in 1989, but it was some years before we discovered a little corner called 'Green patch'.

Incredibly, they were actually going to build Australia's first nuclear power station here some decades ago, but then thought better of it.

If you are visiting Australia and have young kids, make Green Patch a must on your trip. Three and a bit hours south of Sydney, there is a camp site, but it is usually booked up months and months ahead, but there are many other places to stay all around Jervis bay.

The inlet is tucked away around a corner and inside Jervis bay itself, so even if there is a southerly blowing the beach is as gentle as can be. Absolute heaven for picnic with kids.

The sand officially holds the Guiness Book of Records for the whitest sand in the world and Rainbow Lorikeets and Green Parrots peck the crumbs off your hands if you let them.

Simply heaven in a lazy Sunday afternoon

Ha ha ha... funny! I've seen these pix of Jervis Bay before but I didn't notice that they were of Green Patch. Recently, we took JC camping for the first time at the ripe old age of 10 months and we stayed at the Green Patch campground - quite upmarket for us; it's got hot showers! We managed one morning playing on the beautiful white sand before the rain set in. Next time, next time...

I used to live near there and for many years I used to go on holidays there, and I agree, it is defintely a natural wonder, and my parents are still there and wouldn't move.

Awesome place, no place like it on earth, unique and definitely my favourite place to go.
