sore feet

By far and away the best thing about Paris is that they have made absolutely no concession to the car. The city was designed to be navigated by foot and by Metro and that is the way it stays. And, if you are like me and love to walk and wander and get lost, only using a map to get un-lost, then this is a wonderful city indeed.

After my winge yesterday, Yuki said "Go to the Pompidou". She was right. Despite having been there many times before, because it is a modern art museum the exhibits are always changing and are cutting edge. A couple of hours there with lunch in the restaurant on the top floor with its amazing views of the city was enough to lift any weary spirit.

This was followed by what must have been a 20km trek around the Marais and many parts of the city I haven't been to before. There were discreet stylish shopping arcades, classy boutiques, art galleries and cafés for coffee or beer.

What a difference 24hrs makes.

Perhaps I have learnt that when you re-visit destinations, you shouldn't re-visit places. Always look for the new and the fresh and go to parts you haven't been to before. What is refreshing about cities like New York or Shanghai or Tokyo is that they don't seem to be weighed down by the weight of history and they are relentlessly chasing the future, whereas Paris is one gigantic museum, although a very stylish one.

(Note to self: must arrange a visit here with the family for 10 days at this time of year. Paris in June doesn't get dark until 10:30 pm which is perfect as it allows you to squeeze every last drop of energy you have to enjoy it to the full.)
