My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

My name is
Isabel Puerta, I am 25 years old and I am from Caracas, Venezuela. I am an
architect and I’ve been attracted to art since my early years. I consider
myself as a complex person that tries to find balance between opposites, and
specially to find something to learn, every day.

Photography
was introduced in my life as an assignment to learn how to capture space, and
since then my curiosity grew, first about controlling the camera’s technical aspects,
and then I were seduced by the real complexity that photography had: if
architecture is frozen music, as Schopenhauer used to say, photography must be
frozen time. Time, far more than being the countdown of the seconds, it’s the
sequence of moments defined by a place, a subject, a context, a viewer, and
enriched by the complex connections that might exist between them and that
build a lifetime. This is why I think the photography is an art: it´s unique… a
thousand people could take a photograph in the same place, at the same time,
but none will be the same… each one of them will use different technical aspects
(exposure, ISO, lens, aperture), will see how the light hits objects
differently, use different compositions, select different targets, will have
different views, different approach to subjects, but above all of these, as
humans, with an unrepeatable life background and cultural baggage each one will
have an opinion about that instant, and reflecting it, reflecting all of these is
what will define the photograph as a work of art and a way to expression.

I want to
be exposed to a completely different culture and try to understand it. I want
to learn how to express our differences with respect. I want to live it in
order to photograph it.

Isabel Puerta
