Lovely Laos

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Saturday, October 16, 2010 | 3 photos

From the moment you step off the plane in Luang Prabang. You know you've stepped back in time. The picturesque quality of the landscape co-exists beside the rustic, brown roads. Making it easy to forget the outside world. Laos has the unique title of being the most bombed nation on Earth. A feet rivalled only by its' immeasurable beauty.

I have tried to capture some of that beauty. The stairs, bridges and waterfalls are symbolic to me of the journey the Lao people have gone through. Nowadays, they will sing in the streets and look you right in the eye without ceasing as they catch you starring at them. You wonder what on Earth could make these people so cheerful?

Travel to me is about remembering the World is bigger than the box we live in. Life for many is getting narrower and narrower. Photography is my way of reminding people of what's out there. To stop being so focused on little me, and to open up one's experience to all that can be enjoyed in life.

For those that can't or won't get out and see the world. I can take the world right to them with my photos. In this way, i can show them what they're missing.

As a computer professional in my previous work life, i learned how narrow life could get by sitting in front of a screen all day - never enjoying the fresh air or the trees just outside the door. I think that's where I acquired my love for travel and adventure - in the 'rut.' Ironic it is that sometimes we must learn to appreciate something by first knowing it's opposite.

Now i work in fitness, travelling is my hobby. Though i've only been to a handful of countries. I like to get to know a place when i go there. I like to learn about the people.

It's a big amazing world out there, i can't wait to see more of it. Then return to share it with those back home.
