The edge of Europe

I'll never forget the day that I arrived at the southern edge of Europe, the peninsula of Gibraltar. In my opinion, the most special thing about this region, apart from its unique location and its very small area, it is the airport. It is considered one of the most bizarre and dangerous airports in the world , where the runway crosses the main street of the city that connects Gibraltar with Spain.
Moreover in Gibraltar we can find some unique species of monkeys, the Macaques, living in their natural habitat. They can be seen walking around freely and playing with children as they seem to be more friendly with them. They will also try to steal the tourists’ food supplies which can be a pleasant attraction but a macaque’s attack is dangerous. That’s the reason why throughout the route to the top of this strange-shaped mountain, the Rock of Gibraltar, there are attention signs and infirmaries ready to help any victim of a monkey attack, a fact not only surprising but also reassuring.
As an English territory, Gibraltar doesn’t present any difference from the provincial regions of Great Britain. English flags and posters of the Queen can be found anywhere from the streets to bars and restaurants. What is remarkable is the differences between many different cultures that co exist in this city area, the picturesque buildings that looked like an image of a board game and the breathtaking landscapes. It may be a really small area but includes every element that a proper state would have like the industrial zone, the city centre and the docks while the more developed areas lie next to the less developed quarters. From the top of the Rock every neighborhood and district looks tiny and squashed, an image that is unforgettable.
It is also evident the striking contrast between the area outside the borders. The Spanish city of Algeciras is completely different and doesn’t seem to enjoy the same level of development . The crime rate rises dramatically in the outside areas and it is characteristic the fact that our hotel receptionist advised us against moving around at night or moving with great caution.
