This is a sand fly bite. It's about the size of a five pence piece and I've got about 50 of them.  It's amazing how big the bite is considering the size of the fly.

Just got back from a fishing trip in Bateman's Bay, NSW (AUS). I have 50 of the things, most not as bad as that. Some are still itching some 3 days later. Are the little bastards really a vital part of the food chain, or can we exterminate them, please?
