      <title>Photos: Trekking Through The Fort</title>
      <description>As long as I can remember, the abandon buildings on Lower Beaumont (Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX.) have stood mocking the surrounding construction until now. Recently, the high demand for new military housing has marked the destruction of these structures and made these photos more important then ever before. Riddled with asbestos, birds (their excrement), unstable beams, and faulty wiring, they stand as a reminded of what they once were; a part of the fort’s history.

My team and I were recently allowed to go in and photograph the outside of these building. It was depressing being unable to go inside because of safety risked but the essence of the buildings was enough to satisfy my curiosity of what had become of them since my last visit back in 2005.

I found that many of the towering pillars I had marveled at 5 years ago had fallen apart or even caught fire. What worries me the most about these places being demolished is not so much a piece of time no longer existing but the lose of homes for wildlife. While trekking through the area, we came across foxes, spiders of all kind, different kinds of birds, and many other desert animals, which are rarely seen outside of the mountains. Due to the growing population, the desert is shrinking around the mountains. This leaves less and less space for their survival.

But at this point, there is nothing I can do but archive some of what I was able to shoot.

      <title>My Photo scholarship 2010 entry</title>
      <description>
What motivates piety? Is there such a thing as divine inspiration or is it a repetition of our natural urge to express, wish, and dream? Admiration of religious structures evokes strong feelings within each of us due not only to any personal judgments the viewer may hold, but also such architecture builds upon the most base human instincts, therefore creating imagery which we all can relate to on some level. As displayed within this collection of photos, the architecture of Notre Dame holds great power in this respect.

People are seldom my favorite subject for the camera; the mere physical presence of a person does not always merit inspiration to shoot. As I began my search for a series of photos that would convey the idea I wished for, I began to realize the human element of photography did not always necessitate the presence of the literal human. Through the selection of these photos I realized that the stories and ideas which could be told through the remains of what someone constructed were just as rich, if not richer, than a simple portrait of a person. Observance of humanity through their actions and effects; through the footprints we leave behind – that is what I wished to capture. So if I have discovered anything during this experience, it is that I deserve this award because I have found a new appreciation for the art of photography and a stronger bound with what I can see. With this I can not only capture what Bhutan offers me but also learn from what I discover.
