Exploring a beautiful world

The world’s greenest countries

UNITED KINGDOM | Thursday, 14 June 2018 | Views [132]

In recent years, the idea of going-green and reducing your carbon footprint has gained significant popularity. With various hard-hitting documentaries and shocking studies, more and more people are becoming eco-conscious. This has been demonstrated in a few ways: more people are driving hybrid cars, recycling and you can even see a rise in the number of practising vegans over the last few years (the meat industry being a quiet but significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions).

The most prominent of green changes, however, has to be the increased use of renewable energies across the world. Governments are being forced to accept that the supplies of crude oils, coal and natural gases are limited and, in order to cope with a growing and already overwhelming demand for energy, alternative methods must be explored.

There are four main types of renewable energies: biomass (harnessing the energy stored by photosynthesis in plants), hydropower (using the flow of water to spin a turbine to create electricity), wind power (using a similar process to hydropower, but relying on wind) and solar power (converting sun rays into electricity). This year, the UK celebrated that, for the first time, its wind and solar power industries overtook nuclear energy for the production of electricity. This has also meant that the UK’s renewable energy output is nearly 10 times that of coal (this speaks volumes on the shift from non-renewables as five years ago coal was the larger of the two).

Greenhouse emissions also fell by 3%, mostly due to the fall in coal usage. However, in spite of all these achievements, the UK is not the greenest country in the world. So, which is? And how? Using this interactive mapyou can browse through the greenest countries in the world, hopefully your own will be included.
