My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

My first real lesson in photography was when I was at the Bathurst 24 hour race and a Ferrari engine caught fire and was burned out. I took a photo of the burned engine. Walking away I realised the story was the reaction of people to a quarter of a million dollar engine being burned.

Since then I have sought the human story in my photos. Working with the subject and relaxing them is the best way to bring out ‘the moment’.

While ‘the moment’ is by its very nature an artificial construct it’s what photographers do. All great work appears to capture a moment in time where magic happens.

The best advice I have ever received from a professional photographer? “Just get close”. I’ve make sure I get as close to the subject as possible.

I have many areas to improve in. I’m much better with a subject than a landscape, and I can definitely improve my technical skills.

If I am lucky enough to be chosen I want to sharpen up my technical skills. I think I've got the making of being a really good photographer. But I learn much better from seeing someone do something than reading about it.

I hope the photos I have included show a range of places that capture that elusive ‘moment’.
