On NewYear's Eve in San Pedro de Atacama, villagers will put scarecrows outside their front door that represent all the bad things that happened in the previous year. Then at midnight, they light the scarecrows on fire to cleanse the household for the upcoming year. Walking down the street and seeing all the fires was rather beautiful.
