Sumy

I don't know anything about Sumy, Ukraine but that is the next destination on my list. All I know at this point is that I will meet Julie there for the first time. This keeps me going. She will show me Sumy. She will take me by the hand and be my guide. Never been to Sumy. But have been in love with her for a long time.

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Originally from Mexico, I moved to Berlin for a girl, the relationship ended a month or so after my arrival and I decided to stay and live for a time in the city. I came to find this little area in Treptower Park that was free from tourists or even people walking by and did 2 portraits of 2 girls from different nationalities. One from Poland, Kasia. And one from Belfast, Laura. Shot on different days, same area. And for me, as a photographer of portraits, I love shooting outside behind a very natural setting. No extra lighting, just natural night. Both girls conveyed a belonging to the space, even foreign, even not a fashion sense but still, a surrender to the area and taking it all in. There may not be always people go photograph in the journey. If you are lucky enough, you might find a local to show you the way. I was lucky to find this area, enhance it by the area itself and with 2 people to bring it even more to life. I believe in winning this scholarship would be a search for exactly that, a place, a tiny area that speaks so loudly, and if a face or a body can add to it and make significant, that's worth the road traveled. The experience to go to a new place, chasing perhaps an impossible shot, appeals greatly to our inner search as humans, you know it when you see it. It's not about adding people to places, but to integrate them peacefully and in a harmonious manner. This would be my primary reason for wanting to obtain the scholarship. To understand our own space and how the space we live in or are in can be a reflection of who we are within.
