Five reasons why everyone should visit Antarctica

ANTARCTICA | Thursday, 6 September 2018 | Views [73]

A vast landscape of ice, as white as snow, stretching across the horizon. Its natural beauty and seclusion makes Antarctica, in my opinion, one of the most peaceful places to visit. While many people prefer exploring warm beaches, shaded forests and sweltering jungles, the attractions offered by Antarctica are grossly overlooked. Below are five reasons why you should replace whatever is top of your bucket list with a trip to this icy wilderness.

  1. Wildlife - When you consider the harsh, unforgiving conditions of Antarctica (though not for you to worry about as you’ll have the advantage of numerous layers, not to mention the comfort of a cruise ship!), the fact that life has evolved and thrived there is something to be marvelled. Some of the species you might be lucky enough to observe are: four different species of seal (including the beautifully speckled Leopard Seal) as well as the infamous Emperor Penguin as seen in numerous wildlife programmes and children’s cartoons.

  1. Learning - Whenever you book to travel Antarctica, there will be educational opportunities that you would be wise to undertake. These are not the boring powerpoints delivered by equally boring people that you might be accustomed to from school or work, but rather entertaining and thought-provoking presentations by passionate professionals who have dedicated a huge part of their life to studying this wonderful place. Topics of these presentations include; wildlife, history, effects of climate change as well as more practical things such as introductions to photography, ensuring you can capture your memories as well as possible.

  1. The Eclipse - on the 4th of december 2021, the solar eclipse (a rare event that sees the world fall almost into complete darkness) will be visible from Antarctica. The lack of light pollution, as well as the magnificent scenery makes Antarctica the perfect place to observe this natural phenomenon. There are already cruise ship tours being advertised in lue of this event, giving you plenty of time to split the cost over and get prepared. Bare in mind that it will be fifteen years until a solar eclipse will be visible from there again.

  1. Climate Change - although not an official wonder of the natural world, Antarctica does share a few things with areas such as the great barrier reef. This includes the effects of climate change, which are threatening to take the icy deserts away from us. The increase in ocean temperature is not only causing the ice to melt, but it is also putting a strain on the wildlife. Emperor Penguins, for example, are being forced to breed in unfamiliar areas of their habitat, leading to a decrease in their population.

  1. Activities - I’ve spent a lot of this article talking about a stay in a luxurious cruise ship. While I thought it was important to talk about comforts, given that this landscape is notoriously cold, you are not limited to spending all your time here. There are hiking and trekking routes that are lead by experienced guides, as well as kayaking opportunities which offer and alternative way of making up distance.
