Au Pair in Italy

Here are my thoughts on my first 3 days in Italy:

After a teary goodbye to my loved ones I borded a plane to Milan, Italy on wednesday april 2nd 2014. Luca Lazzaroni, the father of the children i will be an Au Pair for picked me up 7 hours later at the airport. The family lives ina a small town outside of Milan called Saronno. The house is a clouster and is beautiful. It has a garden were the children play soccer and is within walking distance to everything in the town. It is completely opposite of New York City and the only downfall is that I do not speak Italian and becasue it is a small town not many speak English. There are 4 children Palao, Giacomo, Allessandro and Anna. They are smart kids that all like sports, except Anna who is a princess. The Parents want me to speak to the children only in English. It is difficult, especially with Anna because can barely speak it at all and constantly is talking to me in Italian. I think I will learn Italian from her just trying to figure out what she wants.

Eva was the au pair they had last year and she made a few friends that Carolina put me in contact with. Giara works at a clothing store and is very nice. She has invited me out for saturday night but I cannot go because there is a boy scout convention with live music that I am going to. Instead I think we will go to lake Como on Sunday if the weather holds. Also I am going to join a volleyball team that plays on wednesdays!

There are so many differences here than in the US. They do not eat eggs for breakfast and honeslty do not eat them often, only once a week becasue they are unhealthy...but oil is on everything!!! The food has been delicous and lots of vegetables which I like. I am already feeling healthier and slimmer which makes me happy. The stores open around 9 am and close at 12:30 then re-open from 3-7. I Like this because everyone either takes a nap or worksout. Mot people o not eat dinner until 9 pm either.

The concert was wonderful. The musicians were two brothers, one who played the flute and one the piano. The music was amazing and so was the turn out. It was held in the old monastary were minks used to eat their meals. They played about 7 songs, the last one I knew because it was Irish.

Before leaving the US to come to Italy I met Krasimir Radev. It was November 8th and about midnight on a friday. After parking my car I met him on the streets of Brooklyn where he asked me for my number. The next day I recieved a text from him asking if I gave hime my real number. I had to laugh at the question but answered with a yes. Once we hung out a few times we began a relationship. Its odd because I didn't know I was goingt o Italy yet but I knew that I wasn't looking to be committed to any one because I wanted to travel and didn't want to get "tied down" in a sense. Since Krasimir is from Bulgaria and only in NY until his internhip is over in April, I thought I wouldn't fall in love...I was wrong. We almost every free day together and late nights after we both finished work at midnight. For over 4 months I became used to sleeping next to him and hearing his voice. He stayed with me at the airport until I had to go through security and he was the hardest person to say goodbye to because he is the one unsure person in my life. I know that my family will always be in the states and I can always go home. With Krasimir its so much harder. We talked about meeting in June in Europe and trying to travel but I know how difficult it will be for me as an american without a visa and no job to be able to stay doing that. After our goodbyes I knew deep down that I may never see him again. He feels the same and hints at me coming to Bularia to work and teach English. I am open to the idea as long as I can get a visa and good job. It will be hard not knowing the langauge but my entire life I have wanted to travel not caring where I go, so whynot Bulgaria.

I am grateful to be able to have this experience and be living an learning with such a nice family.
