Auckland Scottish Highland Games

My name is Martin Wootton, engineer by profession, but photographer by passion. I enjoy all types of photography, but particularly event, sports, wildlife - anything with movement that portrays the moment. I enjoy capturing the expressions of the people concerned telling the emotions involved in their activity. I strive for the "in camera" best possible result, leaving minimal post processing to be done, minor highlights and shadows and small amount of sharpening being the aim.
I love travel and enjoy photographing other nations and cultures when holidays permit. I regularly cover school sports events and have some work published in local papers, as well as school website and newsletters.
Winning this scholarship would give me another opportunity to further my learning and experience a fascinating environment and culture, and hopefully pave the way for future similar expeditions - ultimately more photography less engineering!

Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Photography, a passion, fueled by my father, who provided my “Box Brownie” when 7. My enthusiasm and commitment was rewarded by my 21st birthday present, an OM2n, used over many years (I still have it), while now getting to get to grips with the digital “add on’s” to the original theory.

An engineer to date, I now divide my time to include developing photography to go beyond a hobby.

I have always be one to put my hand up for new challenges, including many overseas assignments. I am very able to adapt quickly to new challenges and environments. Hence, I believe I have the aptitude to take on this learning experience.

My interest in photography is broad, but in particular events, animals, places and people in the real world excite the most, so fits well with the Greenland Brief.

I hope the experience will encourage me to look at subjects, and how to photograph the story in new ways, particularly the places and people aspects, such that I can learn how I may contribute back to the community, in an informative pictorial manner, providing records / accounts of thought provoking occurrences, places, situations and events that would be presentable in the media to inform and stir.

Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Bay Of Islands - "The Cream Trip".
I have recently taken steps to re-direct my career into photography.
My aim from this scholarship is to gain hands on practical knowledge and experience in technique, working in the field, providing output to a brief, and assisting / working in a team, in a challenging environment.
During my career I have always put my hands up for new challenges, including overseas hands on trips. I am very able to adapt quickly to new challenges. Hence I believe I have the aptitude to take on this learning experience.
I attended a presentation by Jason in Auckland in 2012 so am aware of his appetite for work, particularly on assignment, and fully expect this trip to be “full-on”. All my previous trips have been this way, which is how I prefer to work.
My interest in photography lies in the events, sports, animals, places and people, so fits well with the Oman Brief.
By gaining knowledge in these areas, particularly places and people, from Jason, I hope I can learn to contribute to the community in an informative pictorial way, providing media accounts of thought provoking events, places, and situations that would inform and stir.
