I will never forget the day that leads me to RYLA, 2013.
It was July 14/2012, when a guy from law school invited me to join an organization called rotary international. Even though I have never heard of it before, I decided to give it a try and this decision I made leads me to RYLA 2013 (Rotaract Youth Leadership Award).
I come to learn that rotaract is under rotary international which have 1.2million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary members are successful business professional volunteers who work locally, regionally and internationally to combat hunger, improve health sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace and eradicate polio under the motto “peace through service”. That caught my attention; Rotaract club (short for “rotary in action”) is for the young volunteers from the age 18-30. In order to create friendly environment the club have a lot of outings and workshops healed to bring together all rotaract club members as a family.
RYLA (Rotaract Youth Leadership Award) is one of the leadership program coordinated by rotary clubs across the globe. Each year young people from the age 14-30 are sponsored by rotary club to attend the event, which I was chosen for my leadership potential.
RYLA 2013 March 14-17 was held in a town called Ambo, 120 kilo meter drive from Addis Ababa west, which is the capital city of Ethiopia. It was a road trip taken by a bus. Everyone was quiet and ignorant on the way there. The only conversation we made was with our own friends only.
From previous experiences as a student, I expected trainings to be full of long speeches by the trainee. So I find this program more than I expected. It was rather full of fun, excitement and exercises both mental and physical which keeps us active throughout the whole training. Our trainee explained the seven habits of a highly successful people, which are;
1) Be proactive: - it was about taking initiatives. Don’t put limitations and be positive thinker.
2) Begin with the end in mind: -Think of the end result to be motivated.
3) Put first things first: - urgent verses important, focus on important not urgent.
4) Think win-win: -Team coordination is a mind set.
5) Seek first to understand in order to be understood
6) Synergy
7) Sharpen the saw: - character verses personality.

This whole experience changed the way I see thing now. it build my leadership skills, make me curious, be sociable, give back to the community and eager to explore more.
