My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I am one of many young people who is passionate about our world; passionate about seeing. I long for adventures across the water.
As a child I dreamed of working for nat geo, but it seemed so unattainable.
I saved through high school to afford a trip exploring Africa after year 12. I started by volunteering in a children’s hospital in Malawi, then spent three moths exploring the east side of the continent, hitching from village to village and immersing myself in the varying local cultures.
The trip began a love affair with people and my camera. I started out with an Olympus om1, which was my dads first slr, and to date is my favourite camera to take along with me. I now have a digital slr too, which earns points for convenience but loses for weight and romance.
My experiences in Australia and overseas have showed me how photography can be used to cross boundaries, bringing people, culture and ideas together. It can be used as a weapon and a peacemaker, an instrument of joy, persuasion and exploration.
This scholarship would provide the opportunity of learning from a master how to create images that document real life; honest images, that encourage us to feel, explore, understand.
