My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

A few months ago I heard a quote that really made me stop and think about the way I take photos. The quote comes from my father who said, “The funny thing with photography is that you have to follow rules, but you need to break boundaries.” It took me a while to fully grasp the meaning of what he had said. I have since come to understand photography to be something which is constantly evolving in terms of technique and more importantly what we consider to be significant subject matter. Despite this, photography should be something that not only acknowledges its past and fully utilises these methodologies when appropriate.
As an anthropology student a large part of my studies is dedicated to the understanding world cultures in their infinite manifestations. Every individual has a story, but a photo of the story teller can convey depth and understanding. A great photograph, however, can truly bring a person’s story to life. The photographer can capture the story teller and through their work has the ability to determine how a person’s life is perceived by others. Being able to combine two things I love, anthropology and photography, is why I want to be a part of this scholarship.
