Unseen Durbar Square - Kathmandu

My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Sunday, November 6, 2011 | flickr photos

These images were taken in the Durbar Square (Kathmandu) which is a World Heritage place. It is a very visited place and I did not spent much time in the city since I was leaving for biology field work in the southern part of the country. I tried to capture different moments in places were many photographs are taken everyday. When I bring the images back it entices the viewers to ask where it was and then it is a good reason to talk about the whole place in a different aspect. I saw this location on my first day but light was not in the right direction for the pigeons shot, I came back the next day and stood in the flock waiting for someone to make them fly away, those kids made it happen. The cow is such a strong symbol in hindu culture, this one was waiting to be hand fed by devotees. The last image was taken around the corner, I liked the building style and the old army car, waited for the place to clear out and have one person walk through. They might not be the most common shots of the Durbar Square but they are three details that express my vision of this place. I'm a French international student graduating in Ecology and Conservation Biology and living in Australia. I started to learn more and improve my travel photography after being deceived of my shots from a week in Roma 4 years ago. It has helped me with many wildlife images taken during biology trip and when I'm travelling abroad. When photographing on the field I try to bring back images that could make an impact in protecting the species I'm studying and when travelling I try to glorify the richness of the places I visit and the cultures I experience. I have lived with a camera on my shoulder for the past 3 years and I don't think of ever stopping.
