Between two worlds

Ever since I wanted to become a photographer for National Geographic. I never really thought it to be a realistic wish, so I just kept this dream for myself mostly. Still I doubt that it will ever happen. But: as this dream hasn´t stopped repeating to pop into my mind since years, calling me, making me feel bad that I don´t do anything about it and as I grow older each year I fear that one of my biggest regrets in life could be that I never really tried it. I apply here for the third time by now, not expecting a big chance to win, as I´ve seen the quality and number of applications rising each year. But still, this is a chance I think I should take - if I should win, I´d become the most grateful and happiest person on earth to get this chance to work with a National Geographic Photographer. And if I don´t, well. Then I´ll book a flight and do my first photo-only expedition next year, finally starting to work on realizing my dream.

The smell of handmade sausages

When I was about ten years old I remember the first shot I was allowed to make with my Dad´s camera. It was a shot of a steep, curvy, muddy road sourrounded with trees on a family-holiday-roadtrip. This is how my love for photography begun.

Even younger I kept my adventurous soul busy with exploring in detail, collecting insects or shells. I still can spent hours just watching things, life and situations. My proudest watch was a little crab changing its house just in front of me!

With about 14 years I realized, that visual arts and especially photography is my way to make people see what I can´t describe with words. Ever since photography is my passion. The lens allows me to express and memorize all the fascinating impressions, feelings and spirits I encounter when I deal with foreign cultures or even at home (like in my attached story).

And now is a good moment and a good chance to work on my dream to become a professional photographer. I hope you can feel why I apply and why it would make me a happy person to win the competition. Getting first hand experience on a very professional level I expect my photographic skills to boost.

Photos: Scenes of a 4 generation butchers family in Germany.

I still remember the first picture I ever took with my Dad‘s camera when I was ten years old. It was a shot of a steep, curvy, muddy road sourrounded with trees on a family-roadtrip. This is how my love of photography began.

When I was even younger, I kept my adventurous soul busy, exploring nature in detail by collecting insects or shells. I would spend hours just watching things, life and curious situations and can still remember watching with such enthusiasm a little crab as it changed its house right in front of me!

At the age of fourteen, I realized that visual arts, especially photography, is my way to make people see what I can´t describe with words. Photography has been my passion ever since. The lens allows me to express and remember all the fascinating impressions, feelings, and spirits I encounter when I confront another culture or even occurences at home (like in the attached story).

And now is a good moment and a good chance to work on my dream to become a professional photographer. I hope you can feel why I am apply ing and why it would make me a very happy person to win the competition. Getting first hand experience on a very professional level, I expect to boost my photographic skills.

Documentary Scholarship 2011 entry - Your forgotten neighbour

Cows? Cows!

They're everywhere and nowhere. One of our most frequent but also most anonymous neighbours. A challenging theme in terms of finding the balance between the so often tiring and accousing documentaries about mass stock farming and the euphemistic picture we try to keep in mind.

These peaceful creatures already were subject of a book (my diploma in communication design). For this competition it finally became what was originally planned - a film -giving it a voice and viability. Being in a traineeship for On-Air Design / Design Producing at a TV station since one year now I luckily had the opportunity to gain at least some skills to make first steps into film-making.

I love the versatility in film as much as diving into subjects, focusing on forgotten and controversial issues. Documentary film-making to me is a way to express, visualize and draw attention on certain subjects and maybe even to make people think.

As a big and long kept dream this scholarship would be an amazing opportunity to give me the necessary mentorship and experience I need to enlarge my knowledge in documentary film-making. I'm keen on giving you a good story back.

Cheers!
