My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I am originally from Yemen and currently residing in Canada and working as a civil engineer. My passion for photography goes to the time when I got my first point-and-shoot camera at the age of twelve (a Canon 35mm film camera).

I was always amazed by photos capacity to capture moments and freeze them in time. I perceive photography as a form of self-expression, a way to convey, release, and communicate thoughts, impressions, and feelings. It can go as far as a reflection of the subconscious.

My second passion to photography is travelling. I view travelling more as an exploratory experience and enjoyable adventure than a mere leisure activity. In recent years, I started thinking of taking my love for photography and travel to the next level: combining passions with career. I hope this opportunity can offer such a jump-start.

Besides being a great opportunity, the Travel Scholarship to Oman brought back an old dream/wish project. A project of a “photographic documentary” of my homeland, the neighbouring country, Yemen. More specifically the region of Hadhramaut. I aspire that winning this prize might be the first step in realizing this dream.

Travelling back in time: Cuba

I have always had an interest in the modern history of Cuba. This trip was a great learning experience for me. The experience in visiting Cuba stems from the past-look-and-feel aspect of it, with all its negatives and positives. In Cuba, you feel went back with a time machine to visit another era of the last century!
