Seeing the world through someone else’s eyes can be life changing. It wouldn’t even cost you a fortune or force you to use expensive machinery to probe into the minds of other people.
I have always been the kind of person who lives in her own world. I say this not because I don’t care about other people or because I don’t do anything to help the poor and needy but with what I have I could do more.
I feel compassion when I see children on the side of the road at nine o’clock at night with no shoes on their feet and their hands cupped. Looking at me like I am the one who abandoned them. I sometimes feel the urge to take off my own shoes and give it to them but I never do and it’s probably because I don’t really know what it feels like to have your toes be so cold that you wouldn't dare touch them.
I haven’t tried seeing the world through their eyes, not because I can’t but because I imagine it to be so painful that if I were to let it in for longer than a second it would consume me.
There are a lot of reasons people think are legitimate for not letting people into their lives. These reasons might be because they don’t wear clothes as expensive or as stylish as ours, or even because they are simply unattractive. Not one of those reasons are good enough to justify the fact that we go through life barely knowing our neighbours.
Could it be that we are too busy judging people by what we see on the outside, to take the time to actually get to know who is on the inside.
By judging people we are depriving ourselves of opportunities to become a part of amazing stories.
Seeing the world through someone else’s eyes would without a doubt be an enriching experience. Their experiences, their pain, their love could move us to do things that we never thought we were capable of.
By getting to know someone, you are introducing the opportunity to see the world through their eyes. These are amazing opportunities and we reject them without a second thought every day of our lives.
