Exploring a Global Community https://journals.worldnomads.com/kdensmore808/ Sat, 4 Apr 2026 16:57:46 GMT World Nomads Adventures My name is Kristy Densmore, and I'm a visual journalism student at the University of Georgia. I strive to tell compelling stories about my community, but I feel drawn to something more. I feel like my community extends past my school, the city I live in, and really the country that I live in. I belong to a global community. I think in order to fully understand one's local community, one must have a variety of perspectives on cultures around the world. The perception of society, and humanity as a whole, is defined by the underlying raw human condition that's inherent in every one of us. I took the submitted photos when I spent May of 2011 in Cambodia. I spent two days on the Tonle Sap Lake and the surrounding river systems. One of my life goals is to go back to Tonle Sap and create an in depth documentary on the life and roles of children on the Tonle Sap. Many of the children living on the lake don't go to school. It's truly astonishing how they work and help carry their families. It's sad, yet inspiring. It's part of my community, the global community. I love photography. No matter what I’m photographing, I’m excited about it. It’s what I want to do with the rest of my life. I believe in myself as a photographer, but I’ve got a ways to go. I want to sit down and really believe, “I’m just as capable as everyone else out here, and I’ve earned that feeling.” I want to learn− not just now, but for the rest of my life. I want this scholarship because I want to be propelled into my future.
