A place I visited

This past year I visited my grandparents house for a day. Grandma has alzheimer's and grandpa was having to take care of her with her degrading memory. I took a series of photos that would capture the past and present of their relationship. I am a junior in college and wanted to remember the love and commitment they had for each other. These photos were taken and are a treasured memory. My grandfather died shortly after; these are photos that I look back on to remember the way he felt about grandma. Grandma's memory is still going but still remembers and talks everyday about grandpa with tender fondness.

Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

My name is Katie England and I'm a junior art major at Freed-Hardeman University. I have always loved photography and it has been a major influence in my life. I use photos not just to take in memories but to tell a story to those who wish to "read" the photos. I have traveled abroad with school and wish to continue that in my future career as a photographer. Visiting other people and places and showing their story is what photography is all about. Taking the viewer into a different world than their own and seeing it through the eyes of someone else is priceless. I want to open the eyes of others to new worlds, new experiences, and new people through photography.
This series is about the lives I visited when I went to my grandparent's house for a day. Each picture is a representation of them and their story. From growing up not knowing each other to writing letters in college and then getting married with only the letters as their dates. They had been married for 59 years and defied the odds and everyone who said it wouldn't work out. They raised a family together and loved each other till the day my grandfather died. Grandma has alzheimer's disease now and photos give her a chance to look back and visit the life she once lived.

Photos: europe

I have always had a passion for the arts and for photography. When I was younger I always would look at pictures from far off places and dream of the adventures I could have, the people I could meet, the things I could experience. I am a Junior in college now and am working towards that big break that will launch me into the artistic field to start a new life. Being from a small town ,and going to college in the small town, I have always longed to see and experience new worlds. I lived in Europe for 3 months for studying abroad and now I cannot get enough traveling. I realized soon after, that I could combine my passion for photography and traveling and achieve great things. Photography gave me an outlet for ways of getting out of my small town. Through the lens of my camera I could fine new worlds in my backyard that I had never imagined being there. I should be chosen because I have been dreaming of this my entire life. I have the skill, the experience and the passion that will drive me to the stars and beyond. This is where it all begins.
