My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

To me, photography is about striving to get the shot right; about having the patience and curiosity, and always looking for that frame. It is about capturing those moments that may otherwise remain unseen. It provides a medium to share experiences, to share life, to show something in a different light, and to challenge perception. I feel that the ability to tell a story through imagery is art. Simply put, I love photography.
At University I studied Industrial and Scientific photography, which progressed to doctorate studies in the area of Science, focussing on imaging. I remember during my final year as a photography student in Melbourne, Jason Edwards came to speak of his experiences as a National Geographic photographer. He spoke of waiting for hours in a watering hole, with his cameras resting above his head, and of the hospital and quarantine episodes that are all part of the job. I came away thinking “how can I make that be me?”
If given this opportunity, I would bring to it my passion for photography and willingness to learn. I am someone who does not shy away from hard work, is adaptable, and focussed, with an affinity for nature and people. I feel that my multi-cultural upbringing, curiosity, and strong sense of self-improvement would make me suitable for the requirements of this scholarship. I have always had an innate interest in exploring new things, or learning something different about what initially seemed familiar.
I cannot express what this scholarship would mean. I relish the possibility of exploring all corners of the world through my photography and telling stories that words cannot capture. With this opportunity, I would hope to learn as much as I can from Jason, and how I could make this path a possible one for myself.
