A rainy port

Hello, I am Kathrine, a 20 years old student of architecture. My passion for the beautiful art of photography started actually two years ago , when I attended a lecture about it at my university. I was impressed by the way the image could depict emotions , spirits and movements, so I decided delve into the amazing world of fotos. In my free time I use to walk by the sea or around the town, carrying my small camera and photographing anything that may attract my attention. I also love travelling and my camera is indispensable during my journeys. I usually take fotos of landscapes and architectural sites , or of small details that I find interesting and peculiar. I am actually a bit afraid of capturing people, as I have difficulty in being able to offer the spirit that people give out. I generally have many more things to learn about both the techiniques of photography and storytelling, but also about the ability to sense from a picture the reality. So, that great scolarship could teach me the core of photography, that only an experienced tutor could ever know. Also, the peruvian amazon is a place that I always wanted to visit, however I could never be able to afford it.Thank you.

Ordinary love in Kefalonia

Dark dark blue turns into green and white as the head emerges from the surface of the sea.The eyes are now widely open staring at the lavish greenery all around. The afternoon sun is hitting them mercilessly so they quickly seek for shade.

The sand is now covering the body absorbing every slightest drop of water that was on it.So thirsty suddenly, so thirsty that breath is coming out slowly. And then the song fills the air, making the head forget every dizziness and the eyes trying to understand the meaning.

It is talking about a holiday and a summer place where the stars are so bright as the hearts of the people there.A place that all anxiety and frustration go away with the wind, where life seems more simple than it should be.

And the sweet melody fills the air, passes over the shining sea, rests on the thick leaves of the trees, kisses the white sand, plays with the colourful swimming suits until it gets tired and rests on the salted skin.

That is all that the mind recalls from that unforgettable island. An island big enough to cover in a few days when the mind is dancing with rock tunes of the singing birds in the courtyard.Funny animals!!They seem to enjoy every single moment of their lives, as they fly here and there all the time. But they sometimes get tired and need the warmth of their nest, the safety of not being alone.

The eyes really loved the island. They are now full of natural and harmless images. So did the mind, that relaxed and felt home. The body was the only loser- should it be chracterised that way. However so was the soul when the holidays were over, when the bitter taste of loneliness rulled again.

Kefalonia is more than ordinary, is a powerful love. But you need to appreciate the ordinary in order to understand the beautiful.

Beautiful or dangerous

There is a storm outside....Sand is all around, closing me in.Heavy drops of rain push my skin and immediately are turned into thin hot air. Air fast, air sweet ,air of the summer. 2 hours it lasts and then stops as quickly as it started.

No, I weren't in India, it was a hot and strange greek summer in the beach Melani in mount Pelion. What a lovely place to visit and set your tent. Light and dark blue, green and yellow all colours of the surroundings.Sea , sand and trees. My childhood is awashed with that picture.

Every summer for several cosecutive years, Melani was my home. Being there with friends and family , enjoying the greek sun and the sea . I used to play from dawn to dusk , inventing games with my friends. The sea , either angry with huge waves or calm and peaceful, was our favorite game.It was a place of innnocence where all the misfortunes of daily life were left behind. It was not just a beach, back then. It was our secret heaven.

As peaceful and beautiful as it seems to be, sometimes Melani can offer her worse face to the strangers. When the air is strong huge waves can cover the whole beach and the nightmare starts. Flying tents, heavy rain or even drops of hard ice can destroy a moment of fun.But it is all over really quickly and the magic starts again.

Someone can get scared easily , but once you get through it , you realise it is not so difficult. Somehow that worth- visitng place, tries to protect itself from harmful visitors. Although the last few decades, it does not suceed very much, as even more new homes make their appaearence.

Beautiful or dangerous, Melani will always remain a good memory in my mind.

Oia a sight for lovers' sore eyes

Warm air is messing up my hair.Orange sun rays cover my skin. Voices all around me, laughing people, happy couples and kids waiting for a 'lifetime experience' as many of them call it.The sun has already made a big distance in its journey towards the sea level. Step by step it gets smaller and more and more orange. Step by step .. and the music begins.Violins' notes fill in the air forming love songs.

Sitting on a white house wall , I feel so happy and excited. Among my beloved ones I enjoy each and every single moment. Watching the sun setting, listing to the violins solo, touching the cool surface of the wall and smelling the beautiful.. wait what is that GARLIC!! Really that it is. I smell it now even more. Garlic is all around filing my nose. I just cannot stand it and noone around seems to pay attention to it.I'm suddenly getting thirsty, thirsty and full of garlic.

I leave off my friends trying to find some water and escape from that hell of 'gourmet'. It is unbelievable how much could someone pay to watch the really amazing sunset, which to tell the truth is the same from all parts of the earth, and by the same time eat in a fancy restaurant, of course surounded by hundreds of people that came for exactly the same thing. No I'm not a romance-spoiler. I actually enjoyed the sunset from Oia very much. But is it not funny in a way?

Back in time for the final dive , equiped with water and with the inbareable smell withdrawing, everything seems ideal.

The sun finally sets and the thousands clicks of the huge cameras instantly stop.Things calm down and peolple return to their daily-mood, except for those that have just proposed for a wedding. They say that once a couple goes to that place the will either marry or break up,due to the extreme magnetic fields triggered from the volcano. I really did not feel a difference, mainly because I was sourounded by friends.

Anyway, what I found most inspiring was the night in Oia. Partly due to the huge icecream sitting in front of me, but also because of the glimming sight of the moon being reflected on the sea level. From since I remember myself, I loved that sight. That is to me a really romantic scene. That lonely path of the most viewed thing of the sky.

TravellinGrades

Experiences, memories and actions shared to inspire, to wake the spirits up. It's not a rival you are trying to compete, nor a a friend you seek to have. It is always an adventure .

How old were you , when you first remember yourshelf in a foreign country? Which was your first taste of the exotic air of travelling? Afraid, ignorant or enthousiastic? Oh yes, you are now laughing. Alone in the middle of nowhere crying and asking for mum or at that restaurant having fun with friends. No matter where or when you definately had a great time, even if you did not realise it back then.

Or is it that you have never travelled away from your home town? Feeling unhappy about losing a chance to visit the beach your friends asked you for or emerges the desparation about never being given that chance?

I am just setting questions, ones that might not even be reallistic for some people.

Just trying to intrigue some minds and not attempting to embellish your day with a fanatstic trip I had last week.

Just setting questions.

The stories can come next.

Secrets from the road

Fragmented memories are now coming in mind. Sharp shapes, a variety of repeated angles and lines: a place bustling in geometry. BAUHAUS-an architect’s dream. It’s the first time I’ve ever sensed that air, ever felt the journey in my flesh and ever participated in a road trip. Budapest- Dessau – Berlin – Ljubljana was the round. All places of great architectural “desire”.

So were on the way. A group of students partly immature in culture and life itself, however more than keen on finding aspiration and broadening our horizons. Being several hours in a bus is a challenge by its own, that I wanted to get myself through.

First night in Budapest passed more than quickly. A small walk, a few photos from the group’s most aspiring photographers, a prompt breath of the town’s magic and before you realize it, it’s over and then you go again on the road. Leaving with a sweet memory in mind and with a promise to come back, Berlin seemed nearer than ever. The stop in Dessau to visit Bauhaus premises, the first school of fine arts and architecture, aided in our relaxation equally augmenting our excitement.

It is ten o’clock and the group is finally there, with a little rain welcoming them in the enlightened Berlin. Some traditional sausages and other mouthwatering dishes are waiting to be devoured. The local restaurant owner offers helpful advice on tomorrow’s sightseeing. Everyone is now waiting for the bed- sleep; although once the rest of the town emerges, curiosity takes place.

Being in Berlin was as if experiencing a dream. Sightseeing from dawn to dusk including visits at great architectural memorials or various renowned exhibitions; parties when the night cast its spell. Closing my eyes, the clanging sound of metal Jewish faces scattered on the floor of the Jewish Museum, announcing each and every step, still haunts me. 3 days loaded with experience. 3 days indelibly engraved in mind.

The time of separation is always hard. Nonetheless, Ljubljana was ahead waiting to be swept away by an enthusiastic and full of recent memories crowd. Calm and peaceful during our night walk offered us, young architects, its most beautiful face that none of our sketches or models could ever describe.

What a trip, what an experience! No matter how long the journey or how small the duration of each city stay was (or am I trapped by my greedy eyes always wanting things to last longer?), the road will unravel its most hidden secrets. One has just to look carefully!
