I teach creative communications to university students in Pakistan. Having spent almost eight years in the industry, I have developed a strong desire to look deeper into different cultures; to familiarize myself with people and their lifestyles; and most importantly to appreciate and share different ideologies in their organic forms. I have photographed many interesting stories; the didgeridoo artists of Melbourne, the hippies of Nimbin, the 12 apostles on the great ocean road, the centuries old stupas of Taxila, mouthwatering Pesahwari tikka - just to name a few. But the most inspiring stories came from the tribes of FATA who have a long history of resistance against oppression and invaders. The beauty and essence of their widely misunderstood culture helped me realize their undying struggle against militancy and imperialism. In the heart of my photographic experiments lie a dream to create a world free of injustice and prejudices. This photography scholarship will pave the way for me to fulfill my dream. A teacher. A dreamer. A wanderer. A friend. And an amateur photographer! But more than everything, I am a storyteller. I remember as a child filling up my notebooks with fairytales. Things changed as I grew up, but my undying love for storytelling remained unchanged. For my creative satisfaction, I started writing ad copies for a living. But it wasn’t until 2010 that I discovered photography as the most powerful medium for storytelling. The magical control a camera gives in your hands is the most fulfilling experience for any artist. My photography is a true reflection of my own self. It mirrors my dreams, ideas, beliefs, and outlook towards life. In search of new and inspiring stories, I captured many wonderful faces, feelings, cultures, flavors, and marvels; the didgeridoo artists of Melbourne, the hippies of Nimbin, the 12 apostles on the great ocean road, the centuries old stupas of Taxila, mouthwatering Pesahwari tikka - just to name a few. But it was my recent trip to the conflict zone of FATA that made me want to take this hobby into a profession. And I believe this NatGeo's assignment will give me a great opportunity to master the art of photography.
