Desde Lima hasta mi ciudad natal, Manizales, donde me encuentro actualmente fue nuevamente una experiencia llena de aventuras y circunstancias que nunca olvidare por diferentes motivos. Para salir del Perú tuve que recorrer muchos kilómetros mientras disfrutaba de nuevo de sus hermosos paisajes de montanas, playas y desiertos.

Todo se complico un poco al ingresar al Ecuador donde me di cuenta que por no haber realizado la salida de la moto en la oficina de aduana anteriormente, mi moto tenia que pagar una multa de mil dólares para poder cruzar libremente este país y poder llegar a mi querido Colombia.

Pero una vez mas he corrido con una gran suerte, en el momento que uno de los funcionarios de la oficina de aduana Ecuatoriana se convirtió en un gran amigo mío, debido a su gran espíritu aventurero y amor a las motos. Este señor me dijo “si yo fuera tu, no pagaría esta multa y cruzaría Ecuador por la siguiente ruta donde no encontraras retenes de policía aduanera”. Como buen latino, he seguido este consejo y cruce el Ecuador por la ruta que el me aconsejo y no tuve ningún problema con la aduana Ecuatoriana hasta salir de este país.

Mi primer percance en la carretera lo tuve en mi país al explotarse la llanta trasera, me encontraba a unos poco kilómetros de la ciudad de Palmira Valle, donde hace tanto calor que se pueden freír huevos sobre la carretera. En un montallantas luego de quemar miles de calorías bajando la llanta trasera en medio de un charco de sudor y esperar una hora pude continuar mi viaje sin ningún problema. Y por fin logre llegar a la finca de mi abuela cerca de Pereira donde mi familia me esperaba.

Por un momento creí que mi madre me dejaría de querer luego de que tan querida como siempre me dice con una dulce voz “ Jorge, dame toda la ropa sucia que tienes yo te la lavare”, lo que ella no sabia era que yo no lavaba ropa desde Lima Peru y habia tenido que reutilizar en contadas ocasiones diferentes prendas . Y de repente cuando ella abrió esta bolsa amarilla que contenía la esta ropa, uno horrible olor salio de allí y casi la hace desmayar como condorito PLOP!!!

Que en paz descanse mi querida abuelita, la madre de mi papa. Ella falleció sin sufrimiento y al lado de toda su familia el 20 de Agosto, estamos tristes porque la vamos a extrañar pero ella ya estaba muy viejita. Ella y nosotros sabíamos que ya era hora de que ella partiera de este mundo a encontrarse con su esposo como siempre lo soñó.

Es tiempo de disfrutar mi pais, mi familia, mis amigos y hacerle un mantenimiento de rutina a la moto antes de partir desde la ciudad de Cartagena en barco hacia Panamá.

From Lima to Manizales, the city where I was born in Colombia, once again I had many nice adventures and situations I will never forget for different reasons. To leave Peru I had to drive many miles enjoying for a second time amazing landscapes of mountains, beaches and deserts.

Everything got a little complicated when entering the motorcycle into Ecuador I realized I was missing a paper and I had to pay a fine of 1000 dollars to be able to cross freely Ecuador and get to Colombia. After going to the main custom’s office my good luck came once again and fixed the problem. The officer I was talking to and I had an awesome passion in common, we both love adventures and motorcycles. Reason why he told me as a friend “If I were you I wouldn’t pay the $1000 fine, and I will cross Ecuador following a special route which doesn’t have any custom check points”. As a good Latino I followed his advice, followed the route he told me, didn’t worry, and crossed Ecuador south to north with out any problem.

My first road-motorcycle trouble happened in Colombia few miles before Palmira in el Valle del Cauca, it is so hot there that people can easily make fried eggs on the road. And after burning thousands of calories taking the back tired off the motorcycle in a tire-place and waiting 1 hour I was able to continue my trip to my grandmother’s farm (the mother of my mother) where my family was waiting for me.

When I arrived and started unpacking I thought my mother would stop loving me after she told me with her sweet voice “Jorgito, please give all the dirty clothes you have, I will wash them for you”, but she didn’t know I haven’t washed clothes since Lima Peru and I had re-used many of them. And after she opened a yellow bag full of super dirty clothes, she screamed and almost fainted. I love her, and it is a fact that she loves me too.

My grandmother, Isabel the mother of my father, has died on August 20^th. We all will miss her, she was 92 years old and she was really sick. She didn’t suffer and she died in peace with all her family by her. I hope she is now beside her husband as she always dreamed.

It is time to enjoy my country, my family, my friends, and make sure my motorcycle is ready to leave on a boat to Panama from Cartagena in about 3 weeks.

La civilización Inca, la cual ha dejado una gran herencia al Perú me ha mantenido alegremente alejado de los computadores y de las ciudades grandes por las ultimas dos semanas. Como dicen comúnmente aquí en el Perú “ALICINANTE, MOSTRAZO!!!”, es hermoso y deslumbrante todo lo que hay que hay para ver a aprender de esta cultura. Y mas lindo aun, ver como muchas personas y comunidades en lo más profundo de los Andes conservan casi intacta esta rica herencia, manteniendo la lengua Inca, quechua, como lengua principal y otras cosas como su ropa, su arquitectura y su forma de cultivar y cocinar.

Uno de los principales lugares que visite con Daniela Carranza, amiga peruana quien vive en San Diego California también, fueron: Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu, Chincheros, Moray, Salineras, Puno, lago Titicaca, islas flotantes de Uros e isla Taquile.

Vivimos esta experiencia al máximo y tuvo una interesante mezcla de vivencias, donde pasamos de hoteles 4 estrellas en Cuzco, a carpa pequeña y fría en medio de las montañas de los andes rumbo a Machu Picchu, o mejor aun, pasamos de un cómodo y súper costoso avión a un incomodo y súper económico bus lleno de bella gente de la región donde solo se hablaba quechua, y en cada paradero me tocaba bajarme y ayudar a subir pesados costales de vegetales al techo a señoras de 80 años que se dirigían al mercado de la ciudad a vender dichos vegetales.

Ahora en Lima, gracias a Dani y su querida familia, he estado conociendo la capital Limeña y disfrutando de la mas deliciosa comida peruana, es una fiesta en la boca, creo que he subido unos cuantos kilos de mas. Algunos de los principales platos y bebidas que he disfrutado son: Anticucho (corazón de vaca), Aji de Gallina, ceviche de pescado, Rocoto (pimentón relleno), palta rellena (aguacate), pisco sour, lomo de alpaca, mazamorra morada, inca cola, chicha morada, lomo saltado, arroz con leche y tres leches entre otros.

Podrás ver fotos de estas aventuras el las nuevas galerías de fotos en mi blog, y por favor recuerda que mis galerías de fotos están localizadas en la parte media a la derecha de mi pagina web (blog), y no en la parte superior donde están unas galerías generales de otros usuarios.

El próximo jueves comienzo mi regreso en moto a Colombia con el fin de encontrar a mis padres y 2 hermanos. Hace 2 años que no estamos todos juntos, no veo la hora de verlos y abrazarlos.

Hello,

The Inca civilization and his heritage have been happily keeping me away from the computers and big cities for the last few weeks. Like they commonly say here in Peru “ALICINANTE, MOSTRAZO!!!” it is simply remarkable and stunning all the things to see and learn about this culture. And even more beautiful when you see far from cities and high in the Andes Mountains small communities which still live like their ancestors, The Incas, preserving their culture, their language “Quechua”, their colorful clothes, their farming activities, their architecture and more.

Some of the principal places I visited with Daniela Carranza, my Peruvian friend how lives in San Diego as well, were: Cusco, Ollantaytambo ruins, Aguas Calientes, Machu Picchu, Chincheros ruins, Moray ruins, Salineras, Puno, Titicaca Lake, Uros’ flotating islands and Taquile’s island.

We had an amazing trip full of a wide array of experiences, going from nice hotels in Cuzco to a small and cold tent in the high Andes Mountains in our way to Machu Picchu. Or from a comfortable and expensive plane to a uncomfortable and super cheap bus full of beautiful native people where Quechua was the main language and in every bus stop I had to help the old women to lift and put on the roof of the bus heavy sacs full of vegetables, which would be sold in the city’s central market that day.

Now in Lima with Dani and her friendly family I am getting to know Peru’s Capital and to enjoy its delicious food full of flavor, it is a party in your mouth. Some of the best plates and drinks I have tried are: Anticucho (cow’s heart), Aji de Gallina (chicken), ceviche de pescado (fish), Rocoto (stuffed spicy red peppers), palta rellena (stuffed avocado), pisco sour, lomo de alpaca, mazamorra morada, inca cola, chicha morada, lomo saltado, arroz con leche y tres leches.

Next Thursday I will be returning north to Colombia where I will see my parents and 2 brothers. We have not been all together for 2 years, I can’t wait to see them and hug them all at once with my long arms.

Getting to Huaraz

Luego de Huanchaco me fui directo hacia Huaraz, claro que este viaje lo empecé muy tarde y me toco hacerlo en dos etapas. La manejada en los últimos días ha sido espectacular y muy dura al comienzo. Playas, mar, desiertos, dunas gigantes, tormentas de arena, calor, frio, montañas y nevados en dos días… creo que ha sido demasiado porque mi cuerpo ahora esta desgastado y me encuentro con fiebre, tos, malestar general y un poquito de diarrea. Pero la verdad, soy un enfermo feliz pues toda mi vida he disfrutado paisajes lindos, y en los últimos días he visto una innumerable cantidad.Debido a mi estado de salud no podré hacer caminatas por montañas o ciclomontañismo, pero si me iré en un paseo en bus de todo el dia, el cual nos lleva a lugares como “La Laguna de Llanganuco”, unas lagunas azul celeste en medio de las montañas.

Espero estar llegando a Lima el Jueves 16 de Julio donde me encontrare con Daniela Carranza, quien es de Lima por lo cual estaré muy bien atendido en la casa de sus padres, antes de irnos para Cuzco, Machu Pichu y Puno.

After Huanchaco I went directly to Huaraz, I started this trip late in the day so I had to sleep a small town in between. The drive in the last days has been just beautiful and a little hard as well. Beaches, ocean, huge dunes, deserts, sand storms, cold, hot, green mountains, and snow mountains… maybe a little too much for my tall body, which is now all tired and sick with fever, cough, and again a little of diarrhea. But I am a happy sick man because I have always loved beautiful landscapes, and in the last days I have seen hundreds of them. Due to my condition now I wont be able to do mountain biking or hiking here, but I will take a bus tour which will take us to an amazing places such as the “La Laguna de Llanganuco” a clear soft blue lagoons in the middle of the mountains.

I hope to be in Lima on July 16 where I will meet Daniela Carranza who is from Lima, therefore I will be really comfortable in hers parents house before we go to Cuzco, Machu Pichu, and Puno.

North of Peru

North Coast of Peru, Aventura!!!

Hola,

He estado un poco desconectado por dos razones. He estado pasando muy bueno y el Internet en los lugares que he estado son demasiado lentos y no me permite subir fotos al blog.

Un pequeño resumen:

Estuve en Mancora, Peru. Un lugar en la costa norte bien conocido por su buen surf , su buena comida y su excelente ambiente de fiesta. El hostal donde estuve llamado Loki, es el mejor Hostal que he visitado y estaba lleno de viajeros internacionales. Corrí tabla, descanse, me fui de fiesta y conocí mucha gente de todas partes.

Luego maneje hacia al sur por la costa aproximadamente 600 km hasta Magdalena de Cao, donde se encuentra el que es considerado ahora el Museo mas importante de la parte Norte de Peru, MUSEO DE CAO o el BRUJO, hermoso y super interesante(subiré fotos cuando pueda). Cuando me dirigía hacia este lugar tuve mi primer percance en la motocicleta, técnicamente me quede sin gasolina en la mitad de un desierto, se me prendió la señal de falta de gasolina, la cual me da 45 millas para llegar a una gasolinera, la cual estaba a 47 millas… como llegue, no se, pero lo logre, hace tiempo no gritaba tan FUERTE, de alegría y agradecimiento puro!!! Me quedaron pitando los oídos un rato, pues eso de gritar con un casco puesto no lo recomiendo.

Luego maneje un poco hacia al norte en busca de lo que los peruanos dicen es la ola mas larga del mundo para correr tabla, 4 km. Llegue a este lugar, llamado Chicama, pero desafortunadamente las olas estaba demasiado pequeñas. Claro esta que si creo, pues lo que vi muestra claramente que con unas mas grandes, esta ola no tiene fin.

Continuando hacia el Sur, ahora me encuentro en Huanchaco, donde pude cerciorarme de su buena fama para correr tabla, pues pude alquilar una tabla y correr las mejores olas que he corrido hasta el momento en mi viaje.

Que sigue, no estoy seguro el orden, pero iré a unos museos por aquí, y luego a Huaraz, el cual se encuentra en las montañas y como a 600 Km de Lima, donde estaré el 16 de Julio.

I have been out of reach for a while for two main reasons, I have been having a lot of fun, and the internet is too bad where I have been.

Still internet is not good enough to upload pictures but I will give you a little update:

I was at the north coast of Peru in Mancora. A place well known for good surf, good beach, good food, and good party. The hostel I stayed at is the best so far, called Loki. I surfed, relaxed, and met people from all over the world.

Then I drove south for abouth 400 Miles to The Magdalena de Cao, where the most important museum of the noth of Peru is located. Museo de Cao or well known as El Brujo. I will upload pictures soon. AMAZING.

When doing this drive I had he first bad experience with my motorcycle. Tecnicly I ran out of gas. When passing through the middle of a desert the low gas light went on… ohhh noooo!!! When this happen my motorcycle gives me 45 miles to drive, then you are F&%K. I did met the 45 miles and no gas station yet… but it kept running till 47 miles where the ugliest most beautiful gas station was waiting for me. I haven’t screamed so loud in so long of happiness and gratitude. My ears were beeping for about ten minutes after this, screaming with your helmet on is not recommended.

Then I drove 15 miles north to see my self what the Peruvian people call the longest wave in the world, 2.5 miles, located at Chicama. And yes, I saw it, it is true. Unfortunately the waves were not big enough so I could not surf.

Now going south I am in Huanchaco, which is well know for amazing surf as well. And luckily here were medium/big waves for me to surf and enjoy in the afternoon.

What is next, I don’t know the order but I will be going to few more museums around, and then to Huaraz which is on the mountains 400 miles from Lima.

Montañita, Ecuador... alegria

Me encuentro en Montañita, conocido como el mejor lugar para correr tabla (surf) de Ecuador. Todos los viajeros internacionales que vienen a este país sienten la necesidad de venir este lugar. Nuevamente he estado hablando más ingles que español.Este pueblo es súper pequeño, solamente hay como 3 calles de arena llenas de restaurantes, hostales y bares… y una gran playa para relajarse un 100%.Ayer tuve la oportunidad de correr tabla y fue super chévere, claro que debido a que no estoy en la mejor forma no lo pude hacer por mucho tiempo. Espero estar en mejor forma para correr tabla en Peru. Tengo un grupo muy chévere de amigos de Nueva Zelanda, Australia y Estados Unidos. Ellos estan viajando en bus y en la misma dirección mía, por lo tanto de pronto los vere en Perú también.

Hello,

Here I am in Montañita, which is well known as the best surf spot in Ecuador. Therefore; it attracts people from all over the world. Once again, I have been speaking more English than Spanish.This a super small town, there are only like 3 sand streets full of restaurants, hostels and bars… and a huge beautiful beach to relax 100%.Yesterday I surfed and it was fun, but I was able to do it only for 20 minutes due to the lack of surfing in the last months.I have really cool group of friends from New Zealand, Australia, and USA. They are traveling by bus and are going south too, so I might see them down in Peru as well.

Surf town

Baños, Ecuador... Ecoturismo 100%

Tungurahua es un volcán gigante el cual esta aun activo y tiene pequeñinas erupciones de vez en cuando. En su parte baja esta localizado Baños, el pueblo donde es estado por los últimos 3 días.

El ecoturismo es súper famoso en este lugar a nivel mundial, es muy económico y la mitad de la gente que camina por las calles son extranjeros y se escuchan muchos idiomas diferentes. Creía que saber español e ingles era mas que suficiente para este viaje, pero ayer resulte haciendo rafting en francés, pues fuera de 4 personas 3 eran franceses, y el guía muy tranquilo empezó a hablar en francés.

Hasta ahora he realizado varias actividades fuera de lo común como rafting, canopy, canyoning (rapel), aguas termales, visitar muchas cascadas gigantes y ver el volcán Tungurahua de diferentes lugares. He tomado muchas fotos que muestran claramente que es cada cosa, mira la galería de fotos llamada “Baños”.

El día viernes partiré este pueblo lleno de aventuras con destino “Montañitas” localizado en la costa de Ecuador.

Hello,

Tungurahua, is a enormous active volcano which on the bottom has a beautiful small town call Baños, here is were I have been for the last 3 days.

Eco-tourism is famous here and it attracts people from all around the world, I thought that knowing Spanish and English was enough for this trip and NO!!! I have found my self in situations were even the tour guide speaks in French because they are the majority at the moment.So far I have done rafting, canopy, canyoning, hot springs, waterfall seeing, volcano seeing and taking a lot of pictures which will explain what is what… see the photo gallery called Baños.

Tomorrow or the day after I will be leaving to Montañitas, located on the coast of Ecuador to start my slow way down to Lima, Peru by the coast.

Finalmente puedo actualizar mi blog.

Empecemos en orden. El primer día de viaje fui de Manizales hasta pasto. No tuve contratiempos y termine en el “Hotel Éxito”, el cual me costo la módica suma de 20000 pesos. Me demore manejando cerca de 9 horas y me di cuenta que mi cuerpecito no esta acostumbrado a esto todavía, cuando desde Cali (la mitad del camino) ya me dolía todo.Hice una pequeña parada en Buga, donde visite el mundialmente famoso “Jesús de lo milagros” la verdad no le pedí que me hiciera un milagro, simplemente le di gracias por todo y le pedí el favor de ponerse el casco e irse a conocer Sur y Centro América con migo en moto.

El segundo día maneje de Pasto a Quito, luego de esperar 3 horas por un papel en la frontera, maneje 5 horas hasta Quito disfrutando de un hermoso paisaje de las montañas de los andes. Pase por muchos bellos pequeños pueblos. el que mas me gusto fue Otavalo (a 2 horas de Quito) donde viven muchos americanos los cuales se han mezclado con el tiempo con los indígenas de la región creando una nueva raza muy interesante, como indígenas de ojos azules.

El tercer día, cuando me preparaba felizmente para mi primer día en Quito, tuve mi primer contratiempo al darme cuenta que me hacia falta (mejor dicho olvide) el papel que me permite andar libremente en moto por Ecuador. Por lo cual me toco regresar a la frontera y manejar 10 horas este día por un gran descuido el cual nunca volveré a cometer. Aprendí a las malas la lección.

De regreso en Quito, hasta el día de hoy he estado muy bien atendido por mi primo hermano y su esposa, Pablo y Carolina, mas todos sus amigos quienes son súper buena gente. He estado recorriendo Quito de día y de noche. El lugar que mas me han llamado la atención es el centro de la ciudad, donde se encuentran una gran cantidad de iglesias y monasterios bellísimos los cuales tienen una iluminación especial que resalta en todo su esplendor la hermosa e interesante arquitectura colonial. Y para pasar un rato agradable, la “Plaza Foch” localizada en la zona rosa la cual esta llena de restaurantes, bares y hostales.

Los últimos dos días he estado también con Cuong, un amigo Americano de descendencia vietnamita que a vívido con migo en dos ocasiones en San Diego. El esta viajando en bus hace cuatro meses por las Ameritas y va rumbo Colombia luego de nuestra estadía en Quito.

El día de mañana si se me quita la diarrea que tengo saldré rumbo a un pueblo llamado Baños, 4 horas a sur de Quito.

Finally I can update my blog.

Let’s start in order. The first day I traveled towards the south of Colombia from Manizales to Pasto. Everything went well and I finished the day in really descent hotel which cost me only $9.5. I drove for 9 hours and it was enough to realize that my body is still not in the shape needed for this kind of motorcycle trips. In the middle of the drive, around Cali city, my body was all sore and I had to stop and stretch many times to be able to keep going.
Three hours after I started this the drive I made a small stop in Buga, where I visited the world famous “Jesus de los Milagros” (The miracle’s Jesus); The believers say that he makes any kind of miracles happened. I didn’t ask for a miracle, but I told him to please put my extra helmet on, and go with me around South and Central America.

The second day y traveled from Pasto to Quito, Ecuador. After waiting for 3 hours to get all the motorcycle’s paper done at the border, I drove thought an amazing Andes Mountains’ landscapes and many beautiful small towns. My favorite town was Otavalo, 2 hours from Quito, where many Americans live and trough time they have been mixing with the Ecuadorian Indians and have created a beautiful new race, and you see Indians with blue eyes.

The third day, when happily getting ready for my first day at Quito, I realized that I was missing the most important motorcycle’s paper which allows me to transit freely around Ecuador. OHHH nooooo!!! I had to drive back to Tulcan, the border of Colombia and Ecuador, where the paper that had been forgotten by me was waiting to be picked up. I will make sure this doesn’t happened again.

Back in Quito, I had been super welcome for my cousin and his wife, Pablo and Carolina, plus all their friends who are really nice. I had been around Quito during the day and night. My favorite place is downtown at night where all of its old churches and monasteries have stunning lighting set up that showcases their amazing colonial architecture. And to have some fun the Plaza Fosh, in the new town, is the place to go. This place is full of bars, restaurants, and hostels.

The last few days I have been with Coung, my American/Vietnamese friend who was my roommate in San Diego, he has been traveling for four months around the Americas by bus, and has 4 more months to go. After Quito he is going north to the beautiful Colombia.

Tomorrow, if the diarrhea I currently have is gone, I will be going south to a small town called Baños, 4 hours from Quito.

Llegue a Quito el martes pero no he tenido internet. Espero muy pronto tener internet bueno y poder contarles todas mis historias y mostrarles unas de las tantas fotos que he tomado. Ahora no puedo porque me encuentro en un computador muy viejo y con un internet de tortuga.

Las montañas, la manejada, la gente, el clima y la comida han estado super. Vuelve pronto y espero tener todo actualizado.

I arrived in Quito on Tuesday and I have not had internet access, so I hope to be able to tell you all my adventures and show you some of the bunch of pictures I have taken soon. Now I cant because I am in the oldest slower computer I have seen in years.

The drive, the weather, the mountains, the people, and the food have been awesome.

El comienzo / The beginning

El comienzo::

Luego de un largo y barato lechero vuelo desde San Diego a Colombia, donde me toco dormir en el aeropuerto de Miami con todas mis maletas amarradas a mi mano con una cuerda. Todo comienza en mi ciudad natal, Manizales. Donde le moto que mi hermanito mayor me regalo se encuentra, GRACIAS FOSY!!!

La moto ya esta lista y la aventura ha comenzado con un viaje de un día a Santagueda, que es donde se encuentran todas las fincas de verano cerca de Manizales. Visité una muy buena amiga, Manuela Correa, la cual no había visto desde hace 8 años aproximadamente.

Hoy estoy celebrando el día del padre con mi papa, en persona, lo cual no había sucedido desde hace muchos años, estoy feliz de ver y compartir con Papito y Mamita.

El dia Marte Junio 23 salgo en dirección sur con destino Quito, Ecuador.

The beginning::

After a very long and cheap flight from San Diego to Colombia, and sleeping in the Miami airport as a homeless with all my bags tied to my arm with a rope. All has just started in the city where I was born, Manizales. Where the motorcycle my brother gave me as a present is. THANK YOU FOSY!!!

The motorcycle is ready and the adventure started with a day trip to Santagueda, where all the fincas are (finca = summer houses where families/friends get together every weekend). I visited a really good friend, Manuela Correa, who I hadn’t seen for 8 years.

Today I am celebrating father’s day with my father in person, we hadn’t done this since the year 2000. Therefore, this is awesome and I love to be here enjoying my parents for few days.

On Thursday June 23 I will start a 2 days trip going south, final destination Quito, Ecuador.
