Photos: My Scholarship entry - The Ekka Tradition

My keen interest in the world around us has been growing steadily since I uttered my first words "Look, what's that?" This curiosity inspired me to start taking photographs when I was 12.
When I think about my photography, I am not only considering the immediate appeal or use of those images for my own portfolio, I consider their value in the future. Archival images provide a significant insight into the past and assist with providing further education and understanding of past social and cultural traditions.
With the advent of online social networking, we are now seeing how quickly an image can spread and how they can create awareness, provide education and understanding and can be an effective means of promoting positive social change.
Despite the move into the digital realm from film, the art of pure photography will continue to be important in accurately portraying a sense of people and place. I would like to continue to promote that tradition into the future. I know that being mentored by Jason Edwards would not only improve my photographic skills but would also provide an insight into how I can contribute and give back to the community in the future.

Photos: Historic Holland Park Bowls Club - A Family Tradition

Every time I pack up the camera, find a location on the map & head off on a photographic adventure; I imagine myself as an fearless explorer hoping to discover something rare & unique through the camera lens that I can share with the world. A lingering hope is always present that today I might discover a new species on my explorations. I have a genuine desire to contribute to the worldwide archive of photography to help broaden our understanding of the world.

Photography as an art form & story telling medium has become such an integral part of our history over the last 150 years. Over the last 5 years I have been working on expanding my portfolio across a range of photographic styles to determine where my strengths lie. I have tried everything from storm chasing to weddings!

The chance to mentor with a photographer who has contributed such a large volume of incredible images to the National Geographic collection (and the rest) would be an incredible opportunity for me to refine & potentially relearn the skills necessary to become a successful documentary photographer. I believe photojournalism is where my strengths lie & with Jason's mentoring, my skills would improve immensely.

Photos: The Batu Caves - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Photography for me is a way of life and I never go anywhere without my camera over my shoulder. Over the last few years I have been seeking as many opportunities as possible to further develop my skills across a broad range of styles.

Travel photography is where my passion lies and in between working full time as a book keeper, I have taken the opportunity to travel overseas and within Australia looking for new perspectives. I have been focused on learning how to tell a story with images that evoke emotion, curiosity and knowledge seeking in the viewer.

Throughout these adventures in South East Asia, the UK and Australia, I have learnt that by interacting with other cultures, participating in the daily life of the places I visit and always being aware of local customs I have learnt a lot about myself and how I represent myself as a photographer.

Despite my travels and prolific photo taking over the last two years, I still have a lot to learn and the opportunity to fulfil a lifelong dream by working with a National Geographic photographer would be a life changing experience. I love sharing my experiences with different cultures with my friends and family within the image frame.
