Photos: My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

I love traveling and all these photos were taken in China. I've done several trips in my life, whether it's just a local trip in Indonesia (my home country) or abroad. Whether I'm using a backpacker style, or a comfy one with group tour because I'm traveling with my family. Using a tour is quite annoying sometimes. Not ideal for me, because I like to spend some time in one place to take photos, but they always in a rush. But then, I developed this interest in taking photos in a tourist spot, but what I took is not the main object in that place. I took some scenery or view that often missed by other people. However, it's still quite challenging, because too many people in the area, so I need to be patient and wait for the perfect moment to get the picture as I wanted. And the result, is like what I presented to you in this journal.

Oops, I haven't introduced myself. I'm Astra. I learned Psychology. Photography is a new thing to me and I learned photography by myself; read some books, tips, tutorial, and lot of trial and error practice. Having a professional mentor would be a GREAT way to improve my skill. That's why I'm so excited with this kind of opportunity. Lately, I've been considering much about a career as a travel photographer, because it combines two things I like the most, traveling and photography. But I don't know how to start. I always imagine myself, that someday I could write a column and share my pictures so everyone can see what a beautiful world we live in. So, if you see any potential in me, I hope you're going to choose me for this scholarship. I want to learn to be a good photographer. I really do. Thank you.

All of these photos were taken in Hong Kong and I'm trying to show you the night view in this city. Night in a big city sometimes is merrier than the day. The excitement of the people who wants to have fun after work, the city lights, and the colorful scene it creates really put a soul to the nightlife. I enjoyed the moment I spent in Hong Kong, even it was only for a short time. I’m now a postgraduate student majoring in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. I love travelling so much, and I take pictures to remind me of all the beautiful places that I've visited in this world and to tell others about it. I don't have any experience or appropriate skills in photography. If I see something interesting, I just shoot it with my camera, but mostly I didn’t satisfied with the results haha.. So I think this is a great opportunity if I can learn something right from the expert. I admire the works of Nat Geo team, because they really take everything seriously and the results are stunning pictures, stories or films about our world that really moves me to love and taking care of this world even more. I wish that someday I can also do something like that. I really would like to know and experiencing the behind-the-scene process to produce an art like that. If now I can only share my experience and pictures to some of my friends, I hope that in the future I can reach a bigger community and share it with them. To inspire others through my pictures, and to spreading the truth about what's happening in this world, so we can build the spirit of loving this planet and start to do something positive, that is my goal.
