Photos: My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I first started shooting on an old Canon film SLR when I went on exchange in Mexico in 2007 - learning from basic black and white development and printing to digital photography. Since then I have been practicing photography as a hobby, slowly building on my experience and skills both at home and abroad.
I really love shooting film on an old Hasselblad - it's the camera (of many that I own) that I feel the strongest working connection with. Using it has taught me to sometimes slow down and focus on things like composition, exposure and meaning instead of snapping away endlessly digitally.
I recently studied a small business management course in order to launch my own freelance business - at the moment it is predominantly a web design business, but I have slowly been trying to include my photography. I have recently assisted another photographer on some editorial shoots to try and learn some tricks of the trade so that I can establish myself as a photographer.
The place I have chosen to share is the Middle East - I visited the region in mid 2010 a few months prior to the beginning of the Arab Spring uprisings. The middle east is a region that is often misunderstood, but I found to be fascinating, and it's people warm and generous.

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Syria overwhelmed me with it's breathtaking landscape and unbounded kindness. People living in such barren and harsh landscapes moved me with their warmth and generosity; none more so than the bedouins who hosted us in their camp. We made our way to the camp in the back of a pickup truck, lounging on colourful cushions and watching the town of Palmyra become smaller and smaller behind us. We were introduced to the best hunter in Palmyra who rode alongside us on his motorbike and later showed us videos of falcons on his mobile phone. We stood by as camels were given water, car engine problems were solved and dinner was prepared. We fell asleep under a blanket of stars as our new friends explained arabic words and their culture.

My photographic eye thrives every time I travel, and travel was in fact one of the first reasons I picked up a camera. I would relish in being given the experience to combine travel and photography in a more serious assignment such as this. When traveling and shooting I am always conscious of the story I am telling and the reasons I am taking a photo - it should not simply be because the scene is 'exotic' or 'other' but should engage and capture the essence of the area or person and ignite the imagination of the viewer.
