Photos: My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

I'm a nineteen year old photography student at the National Art School. Photography is all I want to do with my life and no matter what I will be pursuing a career in photography. The first ideal photography job that I wanted was to be a National Geographic photographer, that's why this opportunity means so much to me. At University we do art photography, photography that has a thousand meanings and that doesn't even need to look good to be considered art. I love cliches, to me it's just an opportunity to do better then the original photograph or idea. I want to make beautiful photographs that everyone can appreciate, and that's what I see in the National Geographic magazines. The opportunity to go to South Africa to do this would boost my photography career immensely. I want to improve my technique as much as I can, I've recently received a new camera, a Sony Alpha 900, at the present time I have three lenses that go with this camera and am in the process of purchasing a portable flash to go with it. I am willing to do anything to succeed with photography, so the long days of doing photography with a professional National Geographic photographer doesn't worry me, it's exactly what I need.

My Daily Community

<p><img src="https://s3.amazonaws.com/aphs.worldnomads.com/jacquelineheldoorn/31223/DSC00005_medium.jpg" alt="This flower has been pulled from an unappealing background and placed into the spotlight." /></p>
For this project, because of a lack of transportation in the last week I've only been able to stay within my local commmunity, including my own house and backyard, I walked to the neighbouring suburb, which includes my grandmother's house and I've been taking photos continuously of my near one month old niece. What I'm doing with these photographs is trying to show my daily life and my daily community, but not by taking dead pan photographs of everything I see, I've tried to select photographs that show the beauty in these places that I see because of how close I am to them. None of these images have been edited at all, at this point in time in my photography I'm trying to go back to the movement of Straight Photography, despite using manipulations on images while I have been studying at university. Also at university, we've had it drilled into our heads to not do cliched, purely beautiful images, which is partly what I love. I don't want to make completely arty photographs that you need a degree in philosophy to understand, I want to make absolutely beautiful photographs that everyone no matter what can appreciate.
