I was in Egypt, at Cairo, guest at home of an Egyptian friend. That day we would had lunch in her apartment with two other friends that had promised me to bring typical Egyptian food takeaway. Rang the bell, my friend was busy getting dressed so asked me to open the door, so I did and I invited them to enter. The answer was no thanks, we cannot enter if to invite us is not the master of the house! I explained that there was no problem and that she was busy dressing up but we had to talk for 10 minutes on the landing. What a strange rule of etiquette, I would never have imagined.
