My People

I am human. I am a student. I am a photographer. I am an explorer. I am a daughter. I am a sister. But most importantly I am passionate. We live by these labels but the label which is my most favourite is passionate. I feel as though this is the label which brings out the best in every category I can possibly fall into and together that is what I am. For a long time I was looking forward to the day I could get up and leave New Zealand and explore but it was through exploring parts of the world I found I haven't yet explored my part of the world and I decided before I would leave I need to do that. And I'm currently in the mists of this but as I do this I learn more about myself and my home through going to other countries and being amongst others environments. With this scholarship I am keen to learn about others but also through them about myself. I feel that I could turn this experience to benefit not only myself but the other lives I am so fortunate to touch.

A 'place' I have visited

At school photography was just that subject I chose over physics, which then grew into a hobby. When I went away to university my Dad died, and I pushed away from university study and leant on photography.

Something tragically beautiful came out of my Dads sickness. He opened my eyes to the fact that we don’t all live until we’re 100, so don’t waste a second of it doing what doesn’t make you happy. Life is here to enjoy and if you’re not doing what you love, you’re not living. So I picked up my camera and my adventures started on my own back doorstep where I explored the beautiful countryside of southern New Zealand. I enjoy discovering the beauty photography can bring out even in the most neglected things in life.

I’m in my first year of art school where I am studying photography. When I heard of this scholarship with Jason Edwards I was just ecstatic thinking about how much I could learn not only about photography itself but the culture of country we’ll be exploring. The opportunity this scholarship would give me is a perfect taste of my dream job as a National Geographic Photographer.
