Photos: My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

In January 2010 I was burned out from work and was missing the balance in my life. I decided to change things up and went backpacking through Central America for 5 months. I bought a canon S90 and brought it along on my trip. I didn’t think much of it at the time; I just wanted to record my trip. When I returned home I realized that I had discovered the equivalent to my childhood passion of playing with LEGO in photography. It was something I can completely immerse myself in. With the support and encouragement from some friends and photographers I decided to pursue photography more seriously. Since then I have developed an insatiable hunger for everything photography related. Everyday I spend as much time as I can reading about the masters, learning about post processing, and taking pictures. I am more interested in the psychology and different approaches to photography than I am about gear or specific techniques.

My love for this art has only grown with time and I still have much to learn. What I hope to gain from this scholarship is to pick up all the nuances from working next to a real master. I have read and studied many books, videos, and websites on my own but I think there are the little subtleties that you can only learn from being on location and working with a real person.

The thing I look to contribute back to the greater community is to help tell a story through my photos and to evoke and emotional response. Ultimately I hope to be able to inspire others to follow their passion.

I am self taught with the exception of a workshop I went to recently in Alaska. The photos below are from that trip. I hope you enjoy!
