Skógafoss

We'd been driving all day with our friend-turned -tour guide.
The trip had been rough, for some reason she wouldn't let us put our windows down or stop for food, so set was she on showing us everything she could. The never ending summer was upon us, the sun never slipping below a twilight-style light, gripping us in this one day that seemed to stretch indefinitely before us. I had lost all sense of time, stopping to sleep each 'night' for a few hours before the sun would interrupt us again. We tried to draw arbitrary lines around night and day, but failed.
So it was in this dream-like state that we arrived late in the afternoon at Skógafoss waterfall. It was one of those days that you hope you'll have at least once while you're travelling; the day where things just line up exactly as they are supposed to. For us, this meant that it was the most beautiful day we had seen yet in Iceland, the sky a piercing blue that reminded me of summers in my home country of Australia.
The waterfall is set in to cliffs, and the water surged down upon us, leaving us soaked in its freezing mist. The grass around the waterfall was the greenest I have ever seen, as though it had been dyed.
The best part though, was walking directly behind the waterfall, between the water and the cliffs, on a tiny path. If you stopped directly in the middle, you could look through this incredible wall of water, glistening and sparkling in the sun. All around us were blues and greens and yellows and rainbows, when the light caught the water just right.
It was then that we were extremely grateful for the never ending sun after all, for I suspect there is no better way to have seen Skógafoss than the way we did.
And you know what? Our guide even let us put the windows down on the journey home. Magic.
