Seek Experiences - Kutch The handicraft haven

We had gone to shop for some embroidered dresses in Gujarat where we were told by the shopkeeper that some of the embroidery that we loved was from Kutch. He also told us that Kutch is a haven of handicrafts and architecture so we planned a trip to this desert area which is flourishing and prospering in spite of being the epicenter of a very devastating earthquake on January 26, 2001.

Our trip to Bhuj, Bhujodi and Ajrakpur in Kutch was filled with awe inspiring palaces, handicrafts and artists. The hospitality and positive attitude of these people is heartwarming. They live in a barren, hostile landscape but their lives and arts are filled with vibrant colors.
As a filmmaker, i want to show the colors and vibrancy of Kutch through its palaces and handicraft. As a presenter, Jarna wishes to interact with the artists and give more information about their craft to the viewers. Together, we wish to present a story about a beautiful people.
We both are very interested in film-making and winning this scholarship will give us a chance to learn from the best. It might also propel us towards a career that till now has existed only in our dreams. It will be a huge opportunity for us.

Photos: My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

My name is Harish V Devnani. I am an Indian living and working in Beijing. I work in Visual effects and for me understanding the concepts of photography goes a long way in making my work better. But what started as a spark of interest in photography has blown up to a full grown passion today. I love traveling because it allows me to capture different places and people. I like taking my time to compose the perfect frame. Some day when I am ready, I would like to turn my hobby to full time profession.

I should be chosen for this scholarship because I feel I meet the criteria set by Jason. I am willing to listen, learn/re-learn and be patient & focused. I will do my best to be the ideal assistant to Jason. Also I am a good team player. I have traveled a lot but going to shoot in Kruger National Park and Cape Town with a mentor like Jason Edwards would really be a dream come true for me. I have always marveled at the photos taken by National Geographic photographers and have wondered how much passion, patience and dedication goes into each spectacular frame and if I get to see and experience it first hand and some day be able to create the same magic with my camera and inspire someone to save this incredible planet that we have, I shall have fulfilled my life purpose. If I am selected for this scholarship, I promise to give my best to live up to your expectations.

My theme is 'The Magic of Shangri La'. Everyone knows about the exceptional landscapes of Shangri La but I also want to depict the the innocence of the people and the simplicity of their lifestyle.
