5 Reasons Why I’ll Travel with My Kids When I Have Them

SPAIN | Tuesday, 18 July 2017 | Views [530]

I grew up in a slightly unconventional household. Since I was homeschooled, I was able to travel with my parents. We took road trips, took long field trips, and used travel as a way for us to see the world and discover and constantly learn about our planet. Thinking back on this time, I am more and more convinced when I have my own children, I am going to want to take them with me on my travels.

While I am a very long way off from having my own kids, here are 5 reasons why I would want to take them with me when I explore the world.

1.    Future generations will help the planet

One of the greatest lessons I learned on these early trips was that it was our generation’s responsibility to take care of our planet. As it becomes a larger and more integral issue in our world politics, future generations are going to be even more involved in trying to make our lifestyles more sustainable. Seeing some of the beautiful, natural wonders of the world is a great way to learn that the earth needs some TLC.

2.    Kids can learn understanding

No one is more compassionate than a child. Only after living through a difficult world does this begin to change. One of the wonderful things about travel is that it constantly opens minds. If a child is exposed to various cultures and ways of thinking, he or she is more likely to be a kind, thoughtful adult. It’s not a bad idea to expose kids to several cultures so he or she can serve to protect those cultures later.

3.    It’s a wonderful way to create memories

Some of my fondest recollections are of the trips I took with my parents as a child. I learned so much from heading away from my small town and seeing various ways of living, but I also had special moments with my parents and siblings that I will never forget. I won’t remember summers where I spent my time with my nose buried deep in a book (though I loved that, too). I will remember the times we hiked the Grand Canyon and explored the volcanoes in Hawaii.

4.    It encourages a love of learning

A love of learning can make life constantly interesting, and it can often lead to living a fulfilling life down the line. I would hope my kids would always want to question their worlds and to be willing to see things from a new angle. That often requires stepping outside your comfort zone and being willing to immerse yourself in a new context. What I personally love about travel is how it fuels a love of exploring other things, including reading and languages.

5.    It encourages a more globalized world

As our world becomes more and more interconnected, I would love to raise children who are interested in connecting with others. Kids who already know that we are all people, no matter what our cultures or lifestyles may be, are more willing to see the world as a home for everyone. As technology encourages more globalization, I would hope my children would use that in a positive way.

Traveling the world isn’t always easy with kids, but it can be incredibly rewarding—for both you and them. It also teaches you as a parent to revisit ideas that you might have forgotten initially. Even if you are an experienced traveler, it offers you a new way to see the world yourself.
