Photos: My Scholarship entry - Pet sitting Denzel

I started traveling in the noughties as part of my annual holidays. In 2011 (aged 30), I bought my first DSLR for a trip to Japan. Japan became a catalyst to change direction in life. By the end of that year, I left my corporate IT job and traveled for two years. Currently, I'm back in Australia blogging about my travels.

I am mostly self-taught with early influences from my best friend (an amateur/semi-professional photographer). The only formal training I had was a 16-hour introductory course back in 2011.

As a person, I like learning about the world and society. As a photographer, I like capturing nature's presence. When I feel a bond (when I care about this place, person or animal), my photography flows more naturally. The end result is love.

I am driven to take better shots in a continual process of developing my own voice. At the same time, I hope it leads to professional publication.

Winning this scholarship means a chance to have a mentor; go on assignment; learn about the industry; and improve my technical ability. It also means a chance of proving to myself.

I will like my photography to be of service to this world. To open our doors in life.

Photos: A 'place' I have visited

My name is Fiona. As a child, I was an avid reader of history and fantasy. I imagined foreign lands and outer space. Gradually, I became interested in politics, people, society...the world.

There are two places that greatly impacted me. The first was Beijing where I attended the 2008 Olympics. It was the world converged; the goodwill of all peoples, the potential of all nations.

The second was Banff where in the beautiful stillness of winter, my spirit awoke. It has been burning ever since.

Over the past several years, my travels have grown me as a person and strengthened my desire for expression. Photography is my perception of the world; a form that all people can understand. Words or language cannot do the same.

My hopes for this scholarship are to improve my technical ability and open a pathway to the profession. I am an amateur photographer. My photos appear only on my blog.

My aim in traveling (and life) is to seek, discover and understand.
